I know there was an earkier question about a 20 month old, but my DS (3 yrs. old-will be 4 is Aug.) seem to have a lazy eye. I only notice it sometimes. Not all the time. He also has a tendacy lately to hold his hand over his left eye and look out of the right eye. He has a well baby visit with his ped. in August. I wonder if I should wait until then to ask about it. He doesn't like talking to strangers so I am not sure if an eye exam will work. There is a history of lazy eye in the family. My grandfather had it and has worn glasses since 5 yrs and he is 90 now. My mom also had a lazy eye and has worn glasses since 5 as well, but she is now legally blind in her left eye, so of course I worry about waiting. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks. Sorry if this was long.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the responses. I made an appointment with a opthamologist who is liscened in InfantSee. They specialize in infants and toddlers. I will have to wait until the 18th but that isn't too far away. I will let you know how everything goes after his appointment.

I would make an appt with a pediatric opthamologist (not optometrist) right away. The fact he is covering up his bad eye himself means it is significantly interfering with his vision but the good news is that it is usually treatable. The dr. is likely to prescribe a patch which goes over his good eye, to force him to use the muscles on the weaker eye. My daughter started being patched just before she turned 4. Several years of this was not successful, unfortunately, and she did have surgery on that eye when she was 10 - huge improvement, no more sliding eye, no more double vision. Good luck.

My eye doc insisted on seeing my boys starting at 2 because my eyes are so bad partly because it was not caught and corrected soon enough and some things (like lazy eye) can only be properly corrected by a certain age please do your child right and get him to an eye doc asap! A ped does not specialize in eyes he will just tell you take him to an opthamologist by waiting you could cause permanent damage.

Take him now. I started treatment pretty young but it never helped. Now they start it even earlier. A child does not need to talk during an eye exam, infants can get eye exams. A pediatric ophthalmologist has many things they do to check the eyes and most of it is entertaining to kids. I was surprised how easy the exam was for the kids, lots of looking at dancing animals and little animal gadgets, etc. Both my kids were checked because I have a lazy eye. My son was not even two yet when he was checked. Go now because if the early treatment works that is great, but there is I believe a surgery now they can do if it doesn't work. But I do know the earlier you go the better.

The earlier it gets treated the better. Do not wait. It is your childs vision we are talking about. The wellness visit is three months away. Talk to the pediatrician and they can recommend a pediatric optholomologist. Your child could lose vision in that eye. The doctors office is well equipped in dealing with children. When you are done your child will need a patch and glasses or both. Some places like lenscrafters can make your glasses in an hour. Do the right thing and take your child to the eye doctor.

Since he's covering one eye I would get to the opthamologist ASAP. I have a lazy eye (and am also near, and far sighted, and have a slight astigmatism) and have worn glasses/contacts since I was 5. I also went to "eye therapy" where I did all kinds of excercises to strengthen my eyes, and was given "homework" to do at home too. The sooner you get there, the longer he has to strengthen his eyes :)

I agree with seeing a pediatric ophthamologist. The sooner the better so that it can get corrected. They work with kids so even though he doesn't like talking to strangers they can still do a thorough eye exam as long as he's willing to sit in the chair or on your lap, name pictures as best he can and let someone look into his eyes.

I wouldn't wait until August. I would call today and get an appointment as soon as you can.
