I am in total agreement with Sasha. If you are concerned an Ophthalmologyist would know more than the ped. Also, Early On is an awesome program. I had my triplets in it.

I would do two things. I would talk to the pediatrician about getting a referral to a pediatric opthamologist. This would bring you the kind of real expertise that you could rely on to know you are doing what you need to.

Also, contact Early On. You can find a coordinator in your area, by visiting this link http://www.cenmi.org/pair/coordinators.asp

Early On is a social service type agency, that can assist your family with finding ways to help a child's developement when there are unexpected challenges. They have programs to help families of children under the age of three that experience hearing, vision, physical, or mental delays. While lazy eye is not a life long challenge, I'm sure they would assist under the visual end of their programs, given their goal, which is to try to catch problems early, so that the child can hopefully overcome challenges before they have to enter school.

It couldn't hurt to have her eyes examined, so I'd go for it.

Hi A.,
I'm not sure how close you are to Flint but Dr Habermehl over there is world reknowned for his work with children and their vision. I would highly recommend him, he assisted with my LASIK Dr. for follow ups and such and is a very very nice guy.
Their website is http://www.visiontherapygroup.com/ a very good article about a Belgian family that he helped-

Just to let you know, our pediatrician noticed a possible lazy eye with our 4 year old daughter. She suggested we see a pediactric opthamologist and luckily we did. She has very poor vision and requires glasses ( I had 2 opinions ) because I was so traumatized by the whole ordeal (ridiculous me). They are still monitoring her for a lazy eye. You might just want to check it out. Our Dr is Dr. Rao on Orchard Lake Rd. between 14 & 15 mile. Good luck.

Hello A.,

My son who is now 7 yrs old was diagnosed by his pediatrician probably about 2 yrs old as well with lazy eye or in medical terms(esotropia). Before this the slang term lazy eye in my mind was associated with adults because I had never seen a child or heard of a child with this problem. I could not believe his pediatrician was telling me that my precious baby had this problem and I didn't notice he had an eye problem. However, after the shock I made an appointment for my son to see an opthalmologist and was told by the specialist that his eyes do move in sync but he will need a check up by a specialist every year to monitor him. Also, the specialist recommended eye therapy so that his eye muscles would become stronger.

Since moving here, I have consulted with Dr. Lawless on 23 mile and I was thoroughly impressed with his patience and knowledge. Since my son is 7 yrs old now he did recommend glasses and eye therapy. My son eyes are doing fine now and of course, he is wearing his glasses daily.

I hope that I have helped you in some way.

Do some research and maybe get a second opinion and see what happens. My husband was diagosed last month with the same thing and he was told that it would never get worse then it is right now. Whatever you do, trust your instincts and it will usually end up just fine.

i am almost 25 years old and i was diagnosed with a lazy eye when i was a toddler as well and my doctor told my mother i would out grow it and guess what, i never did. my lazy eye got worse. my vision became so impared with my lazy eye that i started seeing double due to it and at some point in my childhood i started subconsiously not using my lazy eye. so now i am partially blind in that eye. to this day i still do not know how to use both of my eyes at the same time. If i were you i would take your child to an eye doctor. they are the ones that will tell you what to do.

i have a 1 year old that we thought just had a lazy eye but it turned out that she is crossed eyed and far sighted. we noticed hers when she was about 5 months old. we went to a dr. in muskegon that said she was fine and that she would grow out of it. i asked at her next dr. visit and the dr noticed it was both eyes not just one. so my opionin is to ask your dr. to refer you to a specialist there is a good one in grand rapids his name is dr peters.

you should try an eye patch you can get them at rite aid or wal-mart my daughter has eye problems and needed to use patches just put it on her good eye and she will have to use the lazy one more and it builds up the muscles so hopefully it catches up with the other eye and if she doesnt like it try to make it a game like shes a pirate or something like that try a couple hours a day and hopefully it works for you

Hello A.,

My son who is now 15 had a lazy eye when he was younger. First thing I did was take him to a pediatric Opthamologist. There were a few things we did to help correct it. We did Patching and he also got glasses.

You have to remember with Dr's such as Pediatricians that they specialize in one area. They may not have all the answers that is why we have other specialist.

Both my boys go to a pedicatrician and they also go to Opthamolgist, Orthopedic, endocrinologist , allergist.

If I were you I would request a referral to a specialist about this. We take our boys to the Kellogg Eye center they are very good. My oldest son no longer has a lazy eye, but we found out has optic nerve damage. I don't mess around when it comes to my children's vision.

Did you take him to your regular Dr. or to an Opthamologist? My son had a lazy eye that I noticed when he was around 18 mo. I took him straight to the Opthamologist who was very impressed that we brought him in, most people wait until they are in school. Anyway, there are things they can do to help him. Eye patches, drops, and glasses were all things we did for my son. My advice is to take him to the Opthamologist (or to another one if you already went to one) and be sure to go to the Opthamologist and not just a regular optician. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!!
