Laundry Detergent for Newborns

I bought some Dreft and later realized it did not have the HE symbol on it. We have a front loading, HE washer. I'm wondering if I can use it anyway, and just use less per load. Or should I pass it on to a friend and purchase something more appropriate? If so, what would work well for the washer and for the baby?

Thanks, moms!

What can I do next?

SA-8 from Amway. Not only is it safe, you use 1/8 cup per load and whites stay white and stains do not stain because it is such a good product. Been using it for 40 years and my daughter with 5 kids, alos. Then Amway pre-wash works for food and make-up stains, etc. and Tryzyme is wonderful for formula and baby food stains, even after several years of storage>. Call emif interested. I am an Amway Dist. but do not work at enlarging my business. I just sell a lot of it to friends.

I also use HE ALL free and clear and have since Elizabeth was born. I also put vinegar in the softener tray as fabric softener. Vinegar is a natural fabric softener and it does not leave residue on your fabrics. So I do the normal cycle on cold with a double rinse.

I don't separate her clothes unless I get a new dark item. If I get a new dark item, I wash it with a white cloth diaper to see if the dyes transfer. If they don't, then it goes in with everything else.

Also a hint about your front loader, don't close the door after you wash. Let it air dry completely before closing so you don't get the mildew smell.

GL!

I used Dreft on my daughters newborn clothes until she was a year. Then I found that Seventh Generation and another 'natural &/or organic' laundry detergent had one for babies and began alternating until the dreft was gone so it wasn't a quick switch on my baby's skin. She had no problem with it and is not 4 1/2. I would not use Tide, Cheer, etc as many/most of them have potentially harmful ingredients in them.

Do you use natural/organic baby washes, lotions, diaper rash cream, etc. on your baby?

For my newborn's clothing, I use Tide HE that is free of dyes, free of scents, free of anything. I think you do need to use an HE detergent for HE wash machines, otherwise it gets too sudsy and the machine will stop.

The Tide that I just mentioned works just fine for her clothes. Good luck!

I highly recommend the brand Mrs. Meyer's. It is all natural, plant-derived detergent, which means it has no chemicals in it and is very gentle on baby's skin. They have a lavender scent that is just incredible. It is for use in HE washers and you can purchase it at Target.

Peace and Joy,

I have a front loading HE washer and have never used HE detergent. I just use what I've always used, only less, as you said. The concern (I think) is just that, if you use too much, it'll get very sudsy. Then the washer will automatically stop the cycle to let the suds dissipate. But it will start again when it senses they are gone. I say, "Use the Dreft!"

Use ALL Free and Clear in HE. It is the #1 brand recommended by dermatologists.

my kids had trouble with dreft - I have only ever used Tide or All free and clear since they were babies - I think they clean better - and my kids didn't have any skin problems at all with them. I can only use Tide or All free and clear as an adult with sensitive skin. All is what my derm reccomends.

In the future, try ALL Free and Clear. It is AWESOME and so cheap! Gets all kinds of stains out, even reflux ones!

I would use way less, if you're going to continue to use it. As you know an HE washer uses less water so the challenge will then be to get all the soap rinsed out of the clothes, that can be even more irritating to baby skin than regular laundry soap. I liked Method but it got expensive - as in double the price. You can use an unscented detergent and I always liked the Dreft pre-treater or Totally Toddler - at Babies R Us for baby stains they seemed to get the milk stains out better than something like shout.

Hi R.! You can try Melapower...Not only does it work great, but it's safe. No toxins or chemicals in it...so it's safe for you baby, but strong enough for our adult clothes too! In fact, all my stuff in my home is like that. My kids (and my self and husband) are healthier and I love knowing that we're all safer (including our dog and the environment).

Good luck!

any detergent that is hypoallergenic and not perfumy should be ok. I know that some major brands have "baby" formulas that will work well for baby, but I don't know about the HE factor.
