so im almost done with my christmas shopping.. my fiance and i decided to go cheap this year but not too cheap.. the only people i have left to get gifts for are my mom, fiances mom, and fiances brother... i already know what im getting for both moms but i dont have a freaking clue what to get for my fiances brother.. He will be 19 in a few weeks and hes in his first year of college.. usually we get him video games but i dont think hes so much into that this year.. theres really not too many things hes really "into" he plays guitar but already has 4 of them and basically anything he could ever need that has to do with them.. the only thing different with him this year is #1 hes in college and #2 he has a girlfriend .. i was thinking gift card but no one knows what exactly he has by him where he will be going to school (he spent his first semester in Ireland so he hasnt really gotten a chance to explore the area by his school) i dont even know where to start with him.. i texted his mom and asked what he wants for christmas and he only told her a few things and they already got them for him (he wanted new sneakers, a few sweaters and a new winter jacket) .. i could just go get him one of those american express giftcards he could use on anything but i duno that feels like im not even trying.. i mean if it comes down to it thats what ill do but i figured id ask on here and see if i got any new ideas ... so what would your kids have wanted at age 19
i asked his mom if he needed anything for his dorm at school but she said she didnt think so .. should i just ask him?

What can I do next?

Well my son is a nineteen year old college student and what he wants most is...food!
Seriously, the meal plan at the dorm only feeds them so much. My son loves it when I send him gift cards to his favorite food places, like Chipotle, and In and Out :-)

What about something with his school logo?
Hat? Sweatshirt? Jammy pants? Jacket?
Look online--still plenty of time.

Find his college's webpage. They should have a link or info regarding the area. From there you can find restaurants or some other activity in the area (like movies, bowling, skating, etc). Get him a gift certificate for one of them (either a national chain or a local hot spot). If that doesn't work, you could call the college and just ask what is in the area. My son is between his Jr and Sr year in college and just turned 21 and these have always been some of his favorite gifts. Especially the first one we got for his favorite local pizza place (and he was quite surprised by it too).

Another option is to get a gift certificate for the school book store...he can use it for books, college logo things, snacks, etc.

Does he have a car?...gas cards are always helpful.

Either ask him for ideas or get him an Amazon.com gift card.

If he's still going to be in school in Ireland you don't want to do the American Express GC unless you know they can be used over there. If he's going to college in the states and you know where it is you can probably look online to see what is around there and get a gc for some restaurant there. Or Amazon GC. At that age it's not about having a gift in their hand it's about getting something they like and use. And gc's are wonderful. I work for a University and our students get so excited when someone sends them one.

Will he be living in a dorm? An under bed storage tote packed with 'emergency food', sometimes they get sick of the cafeteria or run out of money for food. You can also get small electric frying pans (6 inches) for around $10. My friend's daughter is in college and told me that each meal on campus is $7 so $21 a day to eat.

My brother is a freshman in college and even though he has some food assistance, it's still costly. He ran through the money he had saved up before Thanksgiving. He's counting on working during the holiday break and asked family for money. I'm going to fold the money in a cute way and give him some food to take back with him.

I'd send snacks (and a masculine throw blanket).

Put potato chips, pretzels, crackers, beef jerkey, different kinds of chocolate bars, gum, maybe even sm sausage & cheese like they sell at Christmas time, Pop Tarts.

Does he have an iPod, iPad or iPhone? If so, you can't go wrong with an iTunes gift card.

You can easily find out what companies own the movie theaters in his area by going to their websites and searching in the store locator. Then you can get him a giftcard for the movies. Fandango.com Cinemark.com

Gift cards. gift cards gift cards gift cards. I can not say it enough. Only weirdo's would have a problem with gift cards. It's the best kind of gift because they can go out and get whatever they want, or put the amount you give him towards what he wants. I've gone that way with half my family. I know where they would go, and so there you go! Just add a Christmas card to it and you got it made. Now, just so you know, if youg et the american express card, your gonna have to may a little extra for it. I asked about that at a local store about those gift cards.

hope this helps you decide!
