LASIK Surgery

I am scheduled to have LASIK later this month. I am beginning to have second thoughts about it, because there are a lot of scary negative side effects. I have a very high perscription (-12!) and have worn glasses since second grade and contacts since freshman in high school. If you have had this surgery, I would appreciate it if you could share your experience- are you glad you did it? Did you have any side effects? Did you need to have the surgery repeated?
Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

I had it done four years ago and still have impeccable vision. The procedure itself was so quick. There was maybe 10 seconds of pain during and after some burning but that lasted less than four hours. What scared me the most was the healing process. The flap is fragile and care needs to be taken such as showering and sleeping with goggles and being careful not to rub your eyes. I did not have any side effects. I had a positive experience. I still sometimes wake up being amazed at how well I can see.

I think if you have a good surgeon and take the appropriate precautions it should minimize problems. I would ask the surgeon how many people he sees that have problems and what they include.

My husband had it done six years ago, no problems, still great vision.

Let me know if you have more questions.
Good luck,
V.

my husband had horrible vision and a very bad astigmatism in both eyes. he wore glasses his whole life. he had it done and no complaints whatsoever. it's been about 7 years and his vision is still great (and he works with small print computers everyday). good luck with your decision.

I had it done 7 years ago and my husband had it done 5 years ago. We are both very happy that we did it. No problems so far and our vision is still great. Good luck!

I had LASIK in 2000 and I'm so glad I did it! Short of my marriage and children, it is the only other truly life changing event I have experienced. I had terrible vision growing up & until my prescription finally settled at about -10.75, pretty bad. In fact, it was barely FDA approved for my level of prescription so I was quite particular in choosing my surgeon. It was expensive, but so were my contacts because of my high prescription, astigmatism, etc. I have absolutely no regrets and my vision hasn't changed at all since it was deemed perfect after the surgery. I was a little freaked out during the procedure but my doctor was great about explaining each step. My eyes were very "sandy" feeling the first night, but within a few hours I was able to walk from one room to the next and SEE where I was going! On the third day I opened the blinds in my bedroom and saw things I had never seen before...the outline of clouds, the crispness of leaves. Don't mean to sound cheesy, but I was in tears! I never knew I was missing so much out there! Anyway, I had a "bruise" on one of my eyes from where the suction cup was - just a red mark on the white of my eye. It was painless and went away within a week or two. I had to use eye drops for months afterwards (common for LASIK recovery), but found them to be soothing rather than annoying. My eyes did have an adjustment period while driving at night for a bit, but I have zero problems now. I'm so glad I did it. Sorry to have rambled, but it's truly a life changing experience! Best of luck to you.

After my husband, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and 4 other people at work had Lasik - I went and had it done.

I was scared stiff because I did not want anyone near my eyes.

I did have an astigmatism. I used Lasik Plus, Schaumburg (?) and the doctor was very nice about me being freaked out. I am surprised that he actually took his time with me when the waiting room looked like patients going through a revolving door.

It is the best thing I could have done. No more broken glasses due to dogs chewing them up or kids grabbing them off my face. I could see almost perfectly right after the surgery. Now I see better than 20/20.

If you do not have vision insurance, you could check into medical reimbursement.

A bit late response, but, had to tell you - GET LASIK
I had it done over 3 years ago and had no side effects and now have perfect vision. Best thing I've ever done.
Went to LASIK PLUS in OAKBROOK.

My ex husband had it done when he was 12 (he's now 28). He says it's one of the best decisions he ever made. He still has great eyesight and had no problems immediately after the surgery or since. The good really outweighs the bad nowadays! Good Luck with whatever decision you choose!

Hi C.,
DO IT!!! I had it done 2 1/2 years ago and it's the best thing I did for myself. I had -4.00 in both eyes and I was so scared about the procedure but it was super quick and I can't tell you how wonderfull it is to see and not have to deal with glasses or contacts.
Your eyes will be dry for couple of weeks after but it's nothing that eyedrops won't fix. I'm thankfull everyday for having it done . Don't worry, it will be great ;-) A.
