I had my lasik done at Nation Wide Vision. I think it was the best thing I ever did. I do not have to weir glasses or contacts. I do need to put eye drops in often because my eyes are kind of dry, but I think it is well worth it.
Hi - I was wondering if anyone has had Lasik in the valley, if so I would love to hear your recommendations or regrets. Please share stories of friends or loved ones too, any additional info. you can provide would be great.
Thank you all for your input! My sister actually went to BDP about two years ago and she raves about her new eyes! She was almost as "blind" as I am (-5.5). I have made an appointment for a consultation with a doctor who was recommended through my insurance. Of course they are one of the more expensive places with the intraLase & custom Lasik etc. and I am probably looking at around $4k but my insurance gives a whole 15% off the procedure if I use one of their docs. I am going to make a consultation at a couple other places as well including BDP & Schwartz so that I can see what I think and what the different doctors say. I am a little bit leary about Nation Wide because of the price difference, and the fact that they don't use lasers. I assume there isn't a doctor out there who will tell me that the 'newest' and 'most advanced' procedures aren't necessary but we'll see. I am excited - but now I am thinking it might be a good idea to wait until after my open enrollment period so that I can use a flexible spending account and the money will be pre-tax.

T., I had Lasik just over a year ago and I went to Schwartz Laser Eye Center. I had researched what seemed like a ton of different Laser centers, and after all the places I had looked at Schwartz seemed to have the most up to date procedures. I also found out that He is the Laser Eye doctor and Eye Doctor for all the Phoenix Suns, and the Phoenix Coyote teams. That just toped it off for me, I figured if the big pro's prefer him, he must be good. The only downer, is he is more expensive then the other places, but I just didn't want to mess around with my eyes, so I wanted the very best.
Good luck with your decision.
I don't know what your situation is -- but I've asked about it (my doctor's also at Affiliated Eye Surgeons) and was told that I should wait until I'm sure I won't have more children, because your eyes can change in pregnancy. They've had patients who had lasik young, then had children, and have had to go back to contacts/glasses.
I had mine done 5 years ago - the BEST thing I ever did for myself!! My health insurance gave me a substantial discount through Nationwide Vision. I was really cautious going there, but it's not one of the normal locations, all their lasik procedures are done at their facility in Phoenix (on Camelback Rd I think).
My parents both had it done too, but I don't remember where they went. My father needed to have one of his eyes done again after 1 year, but they are both very pleased.
I was really nervous before going in, but they gave me a valium and it was over really quick! I went home and slept and haven't needed contacts or glasses ever since! I did need eyedrops for what seemed like forever, but I think it was less than a year of dry eyes before that went away.
Oh, and my left eye had astigmatism, but responded perfectly to the treatment. I haven't needed any enhancements done, but if I did I would do it in a heartbeat!
I have heard so much great success stories and how fast the procedure is. I saw it done on Channel 8 and it was by a then famous basketball player for the Suns. You may be able to look online to see if they have it for review.
As well I must inform you of my mothers procedure that DID go wrong. The chance of it happening are very very small but like other procesures "their is a chance". Making the decision to have an eppaderal (sp?) is about the same chances IMHO.
She would be *MAD* if she knew I was "complaining" about her ordeal- for she does not blame the very well known doctors at all. My point is to hear what CAN happen- and not focus the doctor/facility.
When the laser makes the line across your eyes (which is basically the goal for the eye correction procedure) 1 of her eyes was corrected but the other..her cornea(clear section) would not lay back flat or back in place like it was. This caused her vision to be very bluury that ended in slightly better than before eyesight.(success rate is 90+ % something with perfect or almost perfect vision) It is hard to explain in typing but the eyes are to just lay back and flat just like they were..you would be blinking a lot and you would notice your vision would be instantly changed. If you looked at my mom directly in the face-it is noticeable slightly. She still cannot drive at night 98% of the time but her glasses are a "lighter duty" script, she did have to use a patch for a while there and other procedures have been attempted to improve but perfect.
Also if you have a stigmatism in 1 or both of your eyes- they give a less of a chance for perfect eyesight correction to be made.
Good luck to you.
I went to Lasik Plus in Scottsdale. Their technology was state of the art and when you talk about eyesight you better have the best. They were not the cheapest but their prices were comparable to the three places who had the same technology. I was impressed with the staff as well as the surgeon Dr Gabriel Perry. This is all they do unlike the other places who do cataracts and other surgeries. I felt I had their full attention and they made the experience one I will never forget or REGRET!
Hi, T. -
I had lasik nearly 4 years ago, just after my daughter was born. It was the best decision I ever made, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. My surgeon was E.F. Bloemker of Affiliated Eye Surgeons in Phoenix. The procedure is very quick, simple and completely painless. It is a little disconcerting to have someone doing things to your eyeball while you are awake, but you will be given numbing eyedrops and a little Valium to help keep the anxiety down. The doctor explained every step along the way. I could tell the results would be good from the moment I got out of the chair. You will leave the surgery center with your eyes covered with hard clear plastic shields, take some medication to help you sleep, then I think typically see the doctor the very next morning. The results were amazing, and continue to improve. After a few weeks of follow-up, my doctor told me that he thought he could achieve even better results in my right eye, so I went in for an "enhancement" surgery. He was right. He improved things even more. I have been glasses and contact lens free and couldn't be happier. I nearly legally blind, with a huge amount of astygmatism in one eye. I can't help but think if it worked for me, it would work for anyone. I would advise that you research your surgeon very carefully. Eye surgery is not something that you want to shop for based on price.
Good luck!!
My advice- do it as soon as possible! I am so happy I had it done four years ago. I have had a baby since (he's 21mo now) and my vision hasn't changed. I love not wearing contacts and glasses anymore. I went to Moretsky & Cassidy in Mesa. I also did a lot of research. I choose them because my doctor had been a LASIK patient in their office. I also really liked that I saw the same doctor for everything- before, during and after the surgery. Their office doesn't look like they spend a fortune on decorating, etc. But their medical equipment looked brand new. I have sent a few friends over the last few years and they have been happy with them, too.
I really hope you decide to do it. It is expensive (don't shop for price!!!) but it is worth every penny! You won't regret it.
Good Luck!

My husband and I both went to Schwartz Laser Eye Center in Scottsdale- he does the Phoenix Suns players. We had it doen almost 8 years ago and it was the best money I ever spent! No problems at all- seeing within minutes of sitting up! HIghly recommend Dr Jay Schwartz
I used Dr. Qumar (sp?) at Hale in Scottsdale. He was great. I have had two kids since and have not had a problem. Although *during* my pregnancies, my eyes sometimes seemed a little blurry. They are fine now.
