I'm considering taking my 4 year old to a pediatric dentist who does laser dentistry to get his cavities filled. What are some of the pros and cons of laser dentistry? I understand you can't treat cavities in between teeth with a laser? Any advice is much appreciated!!

What can I do next?

My son has had a cavity treated with a laser and the dentist did not need to give him a shot to numb the area which was a big plus. My daughter needed a frenectomy to remove the excess tissue between her front teeth so the gap would close. Normally, this would mean sedation, stiches and two weeks of recovery. The dentist used a soft tissue laser and a shot to numb the area. My daughter needed no pain medication afterward and was at school and playing soccer the next day.

The only downside is I couldn't threaten my kids with a trip to the dentist if they tried to slack off on brushing. They LOVE going to the dentist!

I have worked in the dental field for twenty years and have only good things to say about laser dentistry. It's usually used on small cavities only though. Good luck!

Nobody in my house has had cavities yet, but I'd say that a laser sounds infinitely better than a drill. I'm sure they can be much more accurate with it as well. If the goal is to have a kid who isn't terrified to go to the dentist, then I'd say laser is worth a try...
