I got one for my son last year when he was 2. He just turned three and is still playing with it, in fact he loves it even more now than he did then. It's made by vtech and has lots of number, letter and logic games that he can play now, and some that he will have to grow into a bit. Overall it has been one of the best gifts we have ever gotten him. This is a link to what we got him:

I've heard/read good things about the leapfrog laptop and if you have a Costco up there, they've been selling them. I always go to Amazon or the Toys R Us web site and read reviews on EVERYTHING before deciding. You can learn a lot that way.

I don't recall what age we bought my daughter her Nitro Notebook and she loved it. It was definitely a well loved toy between her and her sister.

I remember I did buy it a little before the recommended ages but it still got A LOT of use.

We have a V-tech laptop (not sure of the exact name but I can geet back to you on that if you'd like) that taches numbers and the alphabet as well as a few other fun games. My kids enjoy it a lot. My son was 2 1/2 when we first got it and has been learning from it ever since.
I found it much more durable than the Leap Frog one that we have.
