Lactose Intolerant with a Fear of Soy

My son was nursed for the first couple months but had a major reflux problem so was supplemented with formula. We figured out that he was lactose intolerant so it became soy formula. Then we weaned him off the formula and moved him to soy milk. Now we no longer have him on soy milk from the "estrogen fear". He still reacts badly to the regular milk. A little about his diet: home made soups with fresh vegetables, basically everything we eat which is almost always home made, healthy food.

My question is: is milk over-rated if he is getting healthy fresh food? What do you do if your child can't have soy milk or regular milk?

What can I do next?

Our whole family drinks almond milk. There are so many benefits to having almonds like calcuim, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals etc. Including rich in fiber, protien and carbs and best of all, you don't have to worry about cholesterol levels. Almonds are simply a nutritional powerhouse. The almond milk comes sweetened if you like in vanilla or chocolate. I usually mix 1/2 unsweetened and 1/2 sweetened to reduce sugar intake, or we make smoothies with bananas and strawberries.

Best wishes,
C.~

Just thought I'd share my own experience with lactose intolerance. My son is now two years old, and he drinks soy milk. We tried other altenatives, but after extensive research and talks with several pediatricians and NICU nurses, I chose to stick with Soy Milk and work in other dairy products...yogurt, cheese and things like that to ease my son into dairy. His pediatrician said, it can be overcome with introduction of dairy in small amounts and overtime...

Good Luck!

You might want to try Rice milk or Almond milk. Most are fortified with the extra calcium growing kiddos need.

Some Moms use goats milk.
Yes, I would stay away from Soy milk, lots of contraindications on it. It's not a myth.

For me, as a child, I ate like your son... the reason being that because I ate so naturally and healthily and home-made...my body basically rejected anything "processed" or off a shelf or already prepared. I would get migraines and stomach cramps from anything that was "not" home-made. I gradually grew out of it as I got older in grade school. So maybe this is the case with your son. It was for me. Needless to say, my Parents were always so impressed with me and the way I naturally ate so healthily... but there was no other way, since my body reacted negatively from anything non-home-made. It was just a natural inclination of mine...I was like that since I was very young. Although I could drink milk.

Depending how old your child is... the "whole milk" is for the milk "fats" which is essential for brain development, and the calcium and vitamin D. Perhaps, you can give him supplements? Check with your Doctor. It's always good to continue taking "Omega-3" vitamins/supplements... this also is essential for brain/neurological development and is good for kids and adults.

Good luck,
Susan
