Labeling Clothes

My son is in preschool for the first time and with winter coming, the teachers have remided us to label all their winter clothes and boots. The jacket and snowpants are easy, but how do you easily label knit hats and mittens? I appreciate all your suggestions- I grew up in Florida, so some of this is a little foreign to me!

you can try writing his name or initials on the inside with a permant marker. Or if the hat & gloves have a tag you could write it on that.

Write his last name on a piece of bias tape or some similar material. Cut it long enough to stretch with the hat, then sew it on the two ends, with extra length just loose in the middle.

I second Mabel's Labels!! They have lots of types for various purposes . . . check out mabel.ca (not .com - it's a Canadian based company).

I have a brother labeler that I use to label everything ! Lol. I tried sticking these labels on fabric and none have fallen off yet. The clothes with tags on the inside, I do an extra long label and loop it through the tag and back onto itself. For some tags, I just stick a label on the tag itself. None have fallen off yet, not even the knitted items -- even after a wash or 2. They only fell off when my little one peeled them off. The labeler is great for other school items too, the toyroom, closet, kitchen.. OK, I sound OCD now. ;-)

If it doesn't have a tag, just write it on the inside with a permanent marker.

I stole one of husband's old Ts and cut into squares, wrote all my son's info on them and then stitched into the inside of knit hats, mittens, sweaters, etc.

Magic marker in color that shows or sewing sm label inside cuff of gloves and hat work. If no other child has same initials as yours, then just initials might work. Good luck!

I used to go to a fabric store like JOANNE'S and buy very small patches and either write their names on it or sew it in and then I would sew it to the inside that folds up. It worked great. I only had to replace 1 set of gloves and that's because he left it at the pumpkin patch. To top that off I WAS WITH HIM on the field trip. HAHAHAHA

I work in a preschool, and the masking tape works OK, but there isn't a whole lot of ways to stick or sew on labels. Sometmes the gloves have small care labels inside that you can initial. Your best bet is to teach your little guy to put his gloves inside his hat and cram that into the sleeves of his coat when he hangs it up. Plus, buy several pairs of gloves because they ALWAYS get lost.

I simply put masking tape on the inside of the hat and put his name on it. I had to the the tape on the outside of this gloves though because he would ripe it out of it was on the inside of the wrist. :) The tape as stuck on both all through the two years of preschool. I might have had to retape the hat once due to sweat.

Hi A.,
I had to laugh when I read your question. I also grew up in FL and this is only our 3rd winter here in Ft. Wayne. There were so many things that I had to call friends and say, "how do you do this or that?" Anyway, most hats and mittens should still have a small white tag inside them and you may not be able to get their full name but you can at least get initials in them. Hope this helps and if you want to chat some more my e-mail is ____@____.com...L.

I work in a nursing home, and all 120 residents that live there have to have their clothes labeled in order to get them back from laundry. There is a company that makes clothing labels that you simply peel and stick they do not come off when washed and they are waterproof. I am sorry that I can't think of the name of the company, but they mail them to us. Maybe google clothing labels and something might pop up.....sorry that's all I have to offer, but I do know for a fact that they are made because I use them quite often. Here is a link to a website that will customize labels with your sons name on them you get 50 of them for 7.99 looks like all you have to do is iron them on https://www.namelabels.com/store/index.cfm

Instead of labeling hats and mittens- when your child gets to school and takes of their coat, just put the mittens inside the hat and stuff the whole thing in one of the coat sleaves. That way, when the teacher gathers coats up to take the kids outside, your child's hat and mittens are right there with the coat.

We just put there Initials on the tags inside the boot or hat. If you cant do that then use like masking tape and write there name on it and stick it on the inside of the shoe or where the hat folds up so it can not be seen. Or better yet take there hat and have it emboried on.. I have a friend that has personalized tags that they sew inside of their kids stuff with there names on it. The following is the web site they order from and it is not costly.
