Last spring/summer we had knats that infested our house. I bought spray for my house plants and sprayed all of them. I put several diffrent things in my drains ex: bleach, oil, insecticides. I put out sticky traps next to the sinks (those would catch some of them). We even had a pest guy spray. When it got cold we no longer had them. Well now it is spring and they are back. Every time I cut up fruit or unpeel a bannana they are all over it in seconds. I no longer keep any food out like bread or fruit becasue they get into it. They are driving me crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We too often have this problem. The best solution for me: a little pump bottle, water and a squirt of dish soap - shake up and spray - drops them right out of the air! ;) Hope it works for you!

We went through a similar cycle and were told that the knats come in with the fruit -- especially bananas. I was told to put bleach in the drains etc. to get rid of the current infestation, and to wash all the fruit that comes into the house right away. We've not had a problem for a very long time now.

The pest control people told me that flys, nats, bugs need water to lay eggs so put bleach in your toilette, sinks, disposal and the bugs wont lay eggs there and they will die.

I swear this worked for me in the past when we had knats.

Get a small bowl and put apple cider vinegar in it and then a drop or two of dish soap. They can't resist the sweet apple cider smell and when they go into the bowl the soap kills them.

My grandma told me about this and we did it in her house overnight and woke up and there were tons of knats in it.

I've tried it too and it's worked for me. Good luck!!

might want to do a really, really, really good house clean. use bleach, vinegar, baking soda to clean... open up your house windows on a pretty day and get some fresh air in the house. spray fabric chairs/sofas/mattresses with lysol. clean carpet... interior cabinet space... fridge. etc... good luck.

We had this problem last summer! I had never seen it before! It seemed that every time I would bring home banannas or oranges from the grociery store, we would be over run and then couldn't get rid of them.

We tried these few things and it totaly worked!

Wash all fruit when you bring it home, and then put them in the fridge. (the flies and the eggs cant live in the cold) Pour a little bleach in all of your sinks and toilets at night, spray counters down with the clorox anywhere cleaner, and then place shallow dishes on the counter with a bit of apple cider vineger (red wine vineger worked some too, but the apple cider worked best) with a drop or two of dish soap. We did this, and noticed a HUGE difference in only a matter of a day or so!!! we did this for about a week, and didnt see any more at all! Durring the summer months we contiue to do the bleach in the drains and toilets and bleach the counters, but only do the vineger if and when we needed. The biggest difference is that we also dont leave ANY fruit on the counters any more, and wash them as soon as I get them home.

Hope this helps and you get to re-claim your house again!!

Good luck!!!!

Call me crazy but I would try and find some little gueco lizards. They feed on knats and are cute. Put them outside your home. I believe in the food chain its a God given natural remedy. Just an idea.. Good Luck

We do the apple cider vinegar with the dawn liquid. It becomes a gnat graveyard! :)

I dont' know about knats but this worked with fruit flies. Maybe it will help?? Leave a bottle of red wine open on the counter for a couple of days. Fruit flies will fly in there and drown. It only needs like a quarter of the bottle so have a glass or two then set the trap. Good Luck.

Get some sand box sand and cover the soil of your indoor plants. It smothers the knats- only thing I have found to work! Quick and easy!

We had that, too a couple of years ago. I was told to buy orange oil at a garden center -- not the kind you clean your floors with, but natural orange oil. You put an ounce in a quart of water and water all of the houseplants with it. The gnats live in the plants and lay eggs in the soil. I only needed one treatment, and have never had them again. Some (very few) of my plants got a little yellow, but none died.

The oil comes in a clear plastic bottle; about 10-12 ounces.

It's not harmful to kids or pets.

Good luck!

I don't know where you live, but our Farmers Coop and Tractor Supply have a spray called Demon! It comes in a packet and you mix it with water. It's the best! It kills everything and safe around children, pets, plants & flowers. We spray inside our home and outside for ants and other pests.

We had trouble last summer. We lined the inside of the planters with fly tape. I also lined the top soil with sand (it is suppose to prevent them from nesting). That alone really seemed to do the trick last year and we haven't had any problems yet this year.

I found a tip online last year when we had an infestation of gnats.

Create a funnel out of a piece of paper & place it in a jar or container. The small opening of the funnel should go down. Place a banana peel or whatever they are really attracted to at the bottom of the jar. They will fly in & get stuck. (just make sure there are no gaps on the outside of the paper. I had to seal it with tape) You can then dispose of them. It caught a ton & within a week or so we didn't have any more problems.
