It's just peanut oil that's risen to the top.
Stir it back in then use it.
It's fine.
I actually prefer nut butters you have to stir before using.
Have you tried it? If so, did you love it or hate it?
I recently bought some Kirkland's Natural Peanut Butter from Costco and was very surprised and extremely grossed out to open the jar and find a ton of liquid floating on top of the peanut butter. I attempted to stir the liquid in but wasn't very successful. I immediately put the jar in the refrigerator and am debating taking it back because it is not at all appealing to me. I love the other brands of natural peanut butter and was excited to try Kirkland's but I just can't get over the texture.

The only peanut butter I have found that doesn't separate is the cheap stuff. If you have natural peanut butter that isn't separated you have a problem.

and Gamma's point is what?
There are no added emulsifiers in "natural" peanut butter. So it will need to be well stirred/mixed before use every time.
:)
That is typical of natural peanut butter. When it's been sitting for a while, the oil separates from the peanut butter. It's extremely common. You just have to mix it back together.
I have bought the Kirkland brand along with many other brands. If they are natural, they all separate if they've been sitting long enough.
Okay, so put the jar in the fridge upside down overnight. The oil will go to the bottom, then leave it out just till it hits room temp, mix in. This happens to our natural peanut butters, no biggie.
We only buy organic, natural peanut butter and the jar always has at least a little separation. It just means it likely contains only peanuts , no chemical emulsifiers or preservatives.
Isn't that what you want in your peanut butter?
We use other brands of natural pb too, and can't stomach this one. It's virtually impossible to stir because the jar is so big, and has zero flavor. My kids aren't picky at all and they flat out refuse to eat it. Heck, my dogs won't even eat it. I have 1 whole unopened jar that will be going to the food drive this month.
This is typical of natural peanut butter but I hate it too - we use Jif natural and it does not separate. Justin's also does not separate but is expensive.
That means that the peanut butter is natural. Separation is normal. It is easier to stir when room temperature or even warm. So warm it up, stir it and then refrigerator.
All natural peanut butter will separate - the oil is part of that. It's pure peanut oil, not something added. Salad dressings separate too - they're just easier to shake!
Store the PB jar upside down but really really make sure the lid is on tight. You might put it in a flat-bottomed bowl or plastic container too, just to be safe. You'll have little or not stirring to do - but if you store it for a long period of time like this, there will be little oil near the cap so that first spoonful could be a little dryer.
You're balancing this against healthy oils vs. hydrogenated oils and additives. (Crisco, for example, is partially hydrogenated so it doesn't separate. But it's not good for you to eat those oils!) So what you're seeing is a good thing!
All good natural peanut butters separate. Peanuts are naturally filled with oils, when they are smoothed out, the oils will float to the top. When you stir it all up, it will mix. Take out a spoonful and stir it, since the jar is so huge, it is hard to stir the whole jar. Or as the other moms said, store it in the refrigerator upside down.
It is like fresh squeezed orange juice, the water rises to the top and the pulp is on the bottom, you have to shake the juice to get the full flavor.
I find it good and yet my favorite natural peanut butter is Krema. And as everyone said, it's always spayed at the beginning and storing it upside down helps. Also you can use a single beater to mix it if the oils at the bottom. Enjoy!
One of my good friends told me that a bunch of her high school friends would take that oil and shoot it up in their veins to get high. It was the 70's and anything would be tried.
I think if you can't mix it up and it work well then it's not usable for food. So take it back.
