Kindle or Nook

There are other e-readers available also. We choose android based readers because they have multiple formats that can be read. For instance, my android phone has a Kindle app, but it also has a google reader app and others. Right now, my phone (Motorolla Defy) does everything I need it to and my desire for an ipad is completely gone.

ipad is just too expensive given the other options out there. And if you aren't interested in using the internet on it, then it's not needed at all.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my iPad and can do just about everything on it than I can do on my laptop, except for use some software that Microsoft won't clear for sharing with Apple users. For instance, I cannot read PDF files on my iPad, nor can I view things that require FLASH.

Not a huge loss, as I can just use the laptop or desktop when I need to use those.

I do use the e-Reader quite a bit on it, and really enjoy it.

Just my opinion, but I would NEVER buy a Kindle since it is sold by Amazon and I am still furious with them for selling that how-to book for pedophiles.

THANK YOU for asking this question! I posed the same one to friends and family last night. I am trying to decide if either one would be appropriate for my 80+ parents and in-law. So far I have three "yes, love its" for Kindle. No one has a Nook that I know.
I looked at Nooks yesterday and found the black and white one cumbersome to use. The color one is much more interactive- very similar to an iPad- but does many things besides being an e-reader. (i.e. Way too advanced for non-computer-literate people!) The color one is backlit which I could see might tire your eyes- basically it is a small computer you can read on.
I have an iPad and LOVE it. Think everyone should be issued one at birth. They are so cool. Yes, they have their limitations as noted by another poster but if you have real computer access then they are great as a portable computer/notebook/reader/MP3. And I do have two books on my iPad but I truthfully have never finished them. I spend enough time on the computer that I don't want to read on a computer,also. And it is a bit bigger than I want to hold and read from.
Today I go look at the Kindles. Tonight I will check back on the website and see what everyone else's answer is!

We have all three in our in our family. I love my ipad but for different reasons than the ereaders. Those in my family that have the Nook have not been pleased. There are pros and cons for all three both, but on average the Kindle versions of book are cheaper than the Nook. B&N "claims" to have over 2 million titles, but well over half of those titles are google scans of free pre-1920's books that are out of copyright. You don't need an e-reader to access any of them. You can get them on your Kindle, as well. The only difference is that Amazon doesn't "count" them in their selection of titles. If you are looking for selection, Amazon is still the industry leader. I suppose, in the end, it really depends on what you are looking for and what is important to you. There are several great articles out there that show the benefits of each one. I have a Kindle and I love it! The Kindle has significantly out-sold the Nook, which I think is recommendation enough. If you want a device to read books, I recommned the Kindle.

Everyone I know loves their IPad, but that is much more than an e-Reader, it's more of a laptop. If you want that much functionality, it may be worth the higher price.

For reading, however, I don't want the backlit screen because I know that it is hard on my eyes since I use a laptop for work/school/communicating with friends, and I sometimes notice eye-strain. I want the non-backlit screen for reading books to give my eyes a rest.

I love my Kindle!! I don't know much about the Nook, but Nook color is coming out and you can pre order it now so if you decide to go with the Nook you may want to check into Nook color. What I love about Kindle is that it reads like a book, no glare. It's super easy to use, has wireless download and wireless connect to search for new books, magazine newspapers etc. All the books you buy can also be read on PC, Iphone etc. because they have Kindle apps for everything. I've had my Kindle for about a year and I am very happy with it. Also there are a lot of free books on Amazon for the Kindle.

I have a galaxy tab i love it. Its better then the ipad u can print,weite papers look at all kinds of files its awesome i wouldnt trade it for an ipad it also has kindle on it for book reading,movies, and video conference, look into it its great.

I have an IPad and love it. My stock answer to this question: If you have an extra $500 +, go for it. Mine cost $700 +.

FYI my husband bought our 2 grandchildren an IPad like mine for Christmas; they are 2 and 3 1/2! It has wonderful educational apps. For example, they are being taught bilingually-English and Mandarin Chinese (by nannies, au pairs). IPad has several apps for languages in this case "Kids Mandarin." They love the ABC and number games also.

I just did what you are doing now. I chose the Kindle and love it however do not buy the kindle cover! I have been battling it out with Kindle support since my purchase. The Kindle keeps rebooting and no one would tell me why until I finally got this one support tech. that asked if I used a case. I told him I did and he told me to take it off. Somehow it is causing the Kindle to reboot. They don't want to say anything yet because they are trying to see if they can write a software update that will correct the issue instead of having all the cases returned. The kindle has worked great ever since I took off the cover. I wish the first tech support would have told me that.

Neither! You can read e-Books on your pc, iPhone, Blackberry, etc. So get the service but not the device/reader!

WEll, I don't know, but I just bought my guy a Kindle today for Christmas, so I'll let you know in a couple weeks!

Ipad's a whole different thing, and WAY more expensive, and if you have an Iphone like my guy does, it's redundant.

When it comes to just reading, Kindle wins hands down. Yes, it's nice to have the iPad that can do so many different things, but the Kindle is much easier on the eyes.
