Kindergarten Lunch

My daughter has been in school for almost two weeks now. I have been packing her lunch. Usually, it has been a pb&j or turkey and cheese. I also add in chips, fruit, cheese, yogurt and a special snack. I just think that its going to get really boring soon for her. I was wondering what all you other mothers pack in your kids lunch boxes. Specifically kindergarteners. Thank-you in advance.

What can I do next?

A slice of cold cheese pizza was one of my fave lunches when I was a kid. I always hoped my mom would pack it for me if we had leftovers from the night before. Pasta in a thermos would also be good as well as filling. For sides, I was thinking granola bars, graham cracker sticks w/peanut butter to dip (I've seen indiv. pkgd. cups at the store), a box of raisins or some trail mix, carrot sticks, pretzels or cheese crackers, string cheese, snack size apple cinnamon rice cakes, or you could bake some mini- muffins. =)

It does get boring so once a week is reserved for hot lunch at school. I also bought a food thermos to try out this year so I can pack hot mac & cheese, soup or other hot foods.

In my experience, most kgrtners don't eat much at lunch, so I think you're on the right track. Small quantities, snack like foods such as fruit, crackers, yogurts. I like to push my left overs from dinner into lunches. soups are great, apple sauce, nuts, granola bars....

I would make roll-up sandwiches on flatbread: ham and cheese with green pepper and cucumber or tomato or broccoli coleslaw mix, etc. Top with a little bit of ranch dressing then cut in half - two days worth of sandwiches! For sides: steamed carrots, cherry tomatoes, a couple pieces of candy for dessert especially after Halloween, cottage cheese, pickles, trail mix, pre-packaged canned fruit or fruit in jello. This year, I'm going to try more dips for fruits and veggies, also sandwich items but not in sandwich form - a small roll, a small piece of meat and a chunk of cheese. Just for something different. I would also let her have hot lunch once a week when she was brave enough to try it.

My daughter likes cucumber and carrots with ranch. They sell the little dip sized ranch containers. We make salad and put it in the small ziplock containers. We put the dressing in a separate container so it doesn't get soggy. Some of our favorites are chicken salad sandwich, homemade banana bread, mixed nuts, dried mangoes, fresh fruit salad, pasta salad, Quaker rice snacks (cheddar cheese and chocolate mint are great!), celery and pb. Have her sprinkle a little granola on the yogurt. Just put a little in a zip bag. Maybe Wheat Thins or Triscuits instead of chips once in a while. Each week you can make a list of fruits, sides and main dish for her to pick from. That way she gets variety if she wants it. I was always happy with a pbj and yogurt as a kid and never got bored of it, but my daughter prefers the variety. Also, let her buy lunch once in a while. My daughter loves the salad bar and mexican bar.

Hi,

I understand what you are talking about and my 3rd & 5th grader are so easy with lunches, that I think it is I who gets bored! Anyway, I found some helpful, healthy lunch combos on kraftfoods.com and familyfun.com. Other ideas I do for their lunches is make my own lunchables into "momables" (my friend coined that). I put Ritz crackers, lunch meat, cheese and fruit into separate containers and let them put them together. I also cook mac & cheese or chicken nuggets (wrapped in foil) and put them into a thermos to keep hot. My kids enjoy those. I hope these ideas help!
