My son is in Kindergarten at Marjorie Rawlings this year. I picked this one as my first choice mainly because it's less than half a mile from my house. I thought it would be nice for my kids to go to school with the neighbors. We walk to school with the boys up the street and there are 2 other families on my street, and the family behind us whose kids all go to the same school. There are special programs for art or math or other stuff at other schools, but to me, at such a young age, socailization and belonging to the neighborhood community is more important than a magnet program.

If you look at http://www.pinellaschoice.org/, you can find the schools in the area and see what kind of track record they have.

My daughter just started kindergarten this year. We also live in St. Pete. I was a little worried about her attending a school in the "south side" because of the bad things you hear about the area. She is attending Campbell Park Elementry and I absolutley love the school. It is a marine science centered school. It is also affiliated with USF, the pier and a bunch of other really great programs. She comes home every day excited about what she has learned that day. They have spanish classes once a week, art classes once a week, they take the kids on wonderful field trips. They went to the Florida Aquarium awhile ago and just last week they went to the St. Pete Pier. The security at the school is great as well. They are doing that thing where they scan your drivers liscence to see if you are a sex predator or sex offender. They also keep the doors locked and gates up during the day so that you have to go through the office to get into the school. That way they know who is coming and going at all times. It really is a wonderful school.
