Kinda Gross

I just found out last weekend that I'm pregnant with my second child. I started taking my prenatal vitamins that the doctor gave me; however when I go to the bathroom (#2) it's really dark. I don't remember this happening with my first child. I'm thinking it's just from the vitamins but not for sure. Does it sound like the vitamins or should I be worried?

What can I do next?

I'd agree on the iron...& be happy you can go #2! Those silly vitamins- the iron again- stopped me up- And boy! You don't realize how important #2 is until you don't do it for a while!!!! ;)

It could be from the extra iron in the prenatal vitamins. For an alternative to the isolated vitamins (after the first 13 weeks during which time you need the extra folate), email me and I will send you some info on a whole food concentrate that is extremely healthy for you and baby.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I'm sure it's the vitamins, but I'm not a doctor. I'd ask your doctor about it the next time you see him/her.

I think it's probably the iron.

No worries....it's sounds like the iron in the vitamins is causing that. It should be a problem. When in doubt, call your OB though. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! :)

It is the extra iron, it will turn #2 dark green or black.
If that is a problem, look at other formulas with less iron
and eat more iron vegies. Won't be as dark of a color.

Hi T.! Most prenatal vitamins have iron in them to prevent anemia. You should try to eat something when you take them so you don't have an upset stomach. And iron does make your poo turn dark, no worries.

It's the iron in your vitamin.

It is absolutely from the vitamins. I had that my entire pregnancy...dark greenish, sort of how the baby's looks right after birth. The days I forgot my vitamin, it went back to normal so I was sure that was the cause. Don't worry, this is totally normal.

It could be the iron in the prenatal vitamin. You can just ask your doctor about it. I don't think I would be worried about it, but I know when you're pregnant it's hard not to worry! Good luck!

Yes, it's the iron. It will help if you drink lots of water. Those vitamins aren't really a "supplement" because they contain like 300% of your daily intake of most of the nutrients, so most of it becomes "waste" and your body needs the extra water to deal with getting rid of it.

Also, check with your doc, but the extra iron really isn't necessary until the last half or last trimester. You might prefer a non-iron supplement or a children's multivitamin until later!

It could be the iron. It could also be that your body is pulling so much nutrients from your food that the poop is compacted and dark. I would not worry about this. It happened to me. My only suggestion is to make sure you are drinking plenty of water! 8+ glasses a day will help you body process more efficiently.

Congratulations!!!!!

Its perfectly okay. It is just the vitamins, and its the fiber in the pills that make your stool that way. Its okay.
