You can find a smoothy mix too that is nonalcohol that might taste better.. I think they are in the freezer section.
It sounds like you are going to have a great time at this party...
My daughter is turning 8 and has requested a Luau theme for her party. I think it should be fun, but I am trying to come up with things to do for that age group. Also, Ii am thinking we will do chicken k'bobs, and maybe some fruit k'bobs as well for dinner, but I want to have a nice fruity drink to put in these cute cups I bought at the dollar store. We are not alcoholic drinkers, but I want it to be like a virgin margarita, but I have no clue how to make that. If you buy a mix, is it safe for kids ( no alcohol), and will it tase ok with out whatever flavor the alcohol adds?? Also, any great ideas would be welcomed. (I am thinking about having them make flip flops with matching hair clips by gluing on some fake flowers with a rhinestone or something, and having my sister come and paint flowers on their faces, but can change that for something better for sure:) Thanks as always ~A.~

I like the idea of a drink bar with different flavored sodas and fruits. you could also do some shaved ice in it as well. How about "hula lessons"? I think it would hilarious to have someone instruct all of the kids on how to do a hula dance or you could have a contest to see which group comes up with the most creative hula dance that tells a story. Playing the limbo would be fun, kabobs, make flower leis, or shell necklaces. if you wanted to use drink mixes i would look at strawberry margarita mix-non alcholic its really yummy! if you need a cake let me know. i do cakes on the side and am very reasonable with prices. www.freewebs.com/sweettemptationbakery thanks!!
Noah's Ark has some ready to stuff animals in the luau theme. Feel free to visit www.noahsarkworkshop.com/constancecotton_s9956 to see what we offer. Each animal comes with everything you need to have a great time (stuffing, wishing star, birth certificate and a carry home tote). Best part is everything can be shipped right to your door.
If you would like you can also look into booking a workshop and having me come in to do the event for you so you can enjoy the party yourself.

My daughter is 13 and just 2 weeks ago she attended a Luau party. Luau was the theme but they had pizza and a scavenger hunt at a local mall that focused on Hawaiian items.
They had a contest for the best Hawaiian dressed. My daughter won that because she wore an outfit she got in Hawaii with a Hawaiian robe. She also loaned out the coconut bra outfit, grass skirts, leis, etc. THe birthday girl gave out other Hawaiian flowers, etc.
US Toy at Independence and Parker have some things you might could use as well. Oriental Trading is great but if you are in a pinch, US Toy is pretty good.
I don't know much more than that BUT as far as the frozen drinks....you can get them in the freezer section of the grocery. My daughter and her friends like the virgin margueritas, pina coladas and strawberry daquaris (sp). Decorate the top of the drink with a piece of fruit and a little umbrella like you get when you are on vacation at the beach!!
Enjoy!!
Hi A.,
We had a Luau for my little sister when she turned 14. We set up a little juice bar. I bought different flavored sodas like the pineapple and lemon/lime (the cheap stuff), I also bought some cans of fruit nectar (inexpensive as well), strawberry, cocunut, and some other random flavors. I had fresh fruits, pineapples, strawberries and such, and just blended random mixtures together with some ice, and I couldn't keep up with the demands! Fresh fruit, sweet drinks, and cool cups, you can't go wrong with that!
We also asked for luau stuff on freecycle and got tons of responses. We had cd's and lei's. We also played limbo. We also did the kabobs, fruit and chicken. You can usually get fruit at a decent price at a Fiesta grocery store.
Aloha,
R.
You got great advice already. I can do a couple of hulas and they are so fun (I was born in Hawaii).
Here are some little videos, you all can watch the moves and then make-up your own dances.

Send the invitations in the plastic bottles as "Message in a Bottle" with it typed out on fun, Hawaiian paper, rolled up and tied with a ribbon, and then, placed into the bottle with a little bit of sand or glitter and some sea shells. :D (Be sure to put a ribbon or rubber band or something around the paper, or else, they will have a difficult time getting the invitation out.)
Making them matching flower clips and flip-flops is a GREAT idea! You might even want to save this as an activity (the clips, at least) for them to do and then, take home the clips they made as favors, with the flip-flops.
Something fun, as you mentioned, would be to combine some fruit such as cherries and pineapple with chicken pieces on a skewer. As far as I know, the frozen "drink" stuff is okay and tastes good still, even without the alcohol. Maybe even some Pineapple Soda would be yummy. You've got to have a "pig"; so, maybe some cute little ham and cheese "roll-ups", kept together with toothpicks. You can get those cute little decorated ones, too. You can also use the toothpicks for eating the fruit pieces.
Another activity/favor you could have them make is making leis. You can use the brightly colored straws as "beads" to separate the flowers, or just use flowers. Yes, you can buy the leis, but it's so much more fun (and it's an activity) for them to see how to make them and then take them home.
If I think of other things, I will get back with you and add to my response. lol
Take care, and have FUN! :D
You can get some really cute decorations at orientaltrading.com
We did the luau theme for my daughter's third birthday. I found lots of ideas here http://www.birthdaypartyideas.com/
There were lots of older children & adults so I found a site that translates names into Hawaiian versions & made everyone at the party name tags with their Hawaiian names. We also had a contest for best Hawaiian costume/outfit to encourage everyone to dress up.
Virgin margaritas tend to be somewhat bitter; I think pina coladas would be better. You can find mixes at the grocery store & just do without the liquor.
Have a great time!
