Kids Always Sick This Year?

I was curious if your kids were sicker than normal this year. I have read about the flu shot being off this year, we all got ours. And I have heard how it's been a bad year. We switched daycare providers last summer and our son has been sick on and off all winter! 3 cycles of a stomach bug (January was bad!) have gone through the daycare and I don't know if it's his age (2.5), the newer daycare, this year, all of the above. We're normally fairly healthy. Just curious on your experience this year. Thanks!

What can I do next?

D.:

you might want to look in to probiotics or immune boosters for him.

Yes, my kids have been sick more often this year and it has been lasting longer and been more intense. I have definitely noticed it this year! It sucks. I'm glad this cold weather is ending.

just FYI - they have yet to develop a flu vaccine that is for the current year's strain, so it may not have done much if you had vaccinated, like you said, it was 'off'.

I really think it's to be expected with all the exposure he has - and that's not a bad thing - he'll be better prepared when he goes to school :)

it's not so much that you start a new daycare, but who else comes in that's new, bringing things with them that your son isn't exposed to. I know when my kids were in daycare they seemed to be sick all the time.

In your case I think it's probably 'all of the above' as you say. I am borderline OCD about hand washing - seriously, I wash my hands about 50 times a day, and i'm honestly not exaggerating... i love my long nails, but i see them as bacteria traps too-ugh! I go through more hand soap than I care to mention :) Since I have made my kids start this habit... and I am always on them to wash their hands, we have been doing very well (knock on wood). Everybody has the Purell handwash in their backpack, purse or lunch bag too.

just my 2 cents... curious if others have seen this as a particularly bad year.

OMG, I'm sick now with probably my 5th cold since Christmas and I'm not exaggerating. Since Christmas SOMEONE in our house of 4 (2 adults and 2 little ones) has been sick. I think we've had ONE weekend without a runny nose. Again, not exaggerating.

We keep a clean house, wash hands and I eat pretty well. But, for some reason 2008 has just been horrible with colds for us. My boys are in daycare, but my older son has been there for two years and my 8 month old was there from 7 weeks on and wasn't sick at all until about 5 months. It's a clean center and we've never had much of an issue with colds since being there (unlike the center we went to before).

I hope this batch of nice weather will let us open the windows and get some fresh air in. We are also going to get our carpets, couch and air ducts cleaned soon.

Hope your son feels better soon!

you need to boost your childs immune system. You can do this with probiotics, Vit C, Vit A, Vit E, Zinc, Selenium. Another natural way is regular chiropractic adjustments to free up the nerve supply to the immune system itself. Let me know what area you live in and I'll give you the name of a good pediatric chiropractor.

Strangely enough, our child was fairly healthy this winter. He's also in daycare and was only breastfed for 5 months (and that ended in June)

Maybe we just got lucky?

I think every family is different. Our kids got sick way back in November with colds. My oldest daughter had to be put on antibiotics. My youngest (5 months at the the time) made it through without any medications. They both got another strain of the cold in December. That one went away pretty quickly. Since then we all haven't been sick the whole season. Except for the past month. I went on vacation to visit my sisters and picked up the flu from her family. But I was the only one who ended up getting it. Which is funny, because I usually only get the flu once every 5-6 years. I have a great immune system. That was the first time I've been sick all year. So all in all our family had the normal amount of sicknesses. Nothing out of the ordinary.
