So What Happened?

My daughter was so brave to go through her surgeries...her adnoids And tonsels were removed. She did very well for her first time. (When I was little I went through a few surgeries by the time I was her age) It wound up not just being her day, since the doctor also put her half-sister (same dad) getting tubes in her ears on the same day, and time. So it was a big rush to get both girls ready for the hospital (A. wound up wanting to stay at our house the night before) If I had known the following would have happened I just would have begged to change the surgery date...my husband, their so called dad, was the one to get us there and waited with us before surgery...but at some point my husband decided to wait with the other mom/child...leaving me not knowing what to say to my grandma in the waiting area. I turned into a even more nervous wreck during the 2 hours it took to get our child feeling well enough to go home. She even had a fit about another patient being served toast almost right in front of her..so much so she refused yummy pudding! Unfortunately for me she only had a 1 hour nap that day, and by 4 pm she Had toast with milk! I have a stubborn one! Also look out for their reaction to Tylenol w/ codeine...I gave it to her thinking I was helping her..turns out IT was giving her the belly aches! Her stitches gave her No trouble at all. A miracle considering she used to cough and gag alot. Thanks for all your advice!!!

I just posted the same request this week. My son is getting his tonsils out too and he is also six. We're not sure of his surgery date yet but we are hoping to have it done during spring break. Keep me posted and let me know how you son does. Good Luck.

My 5 year old has his tonsils and adnoids out (and tubes in his ears) this past August. He did great. It was an easy procedure and he has a very fast and easy recovery. The surgery was in the mornind and lasted maybe an hour. He was in recovery for an hour or so. He woke up very easily and after he ate a popsicle he was ready to go. At home he was already talking and was barely hoarse. He was up running around a couple of hours later, would not sleep, and did not even act like he has surgery. I of course was making him lay down, becuase I did not want him to get an infection or overdo it. After calling the Dr they said that some kids are like that. I gave him jello, popsicles and ice cream all day, but he wanted eggs for dinner. He ate those just fine and by the next day he was on solid foods. It was summer break,so he was not in school. I would say after 2 days total he could have gone back to school if he was in school. Some kids go back the next day!

Good luck!

Hello,
My son had his tonsils out just before Christmas, he was 17 months. That is almost unheard of because he was so young, but he had apnea and did as expected. he would not eat or drink and cried alot because of the pain of swallowing. they gave him tylenol with codeine and that helped alittle bit. He does not like ice cream so that was out. lots of ice chips or popsicles, jello, pudding things like that, but nothing RED. Shakes are a blessing. An ice pack on the throat tends to help also. It takes about a month to heal, but the first two weeks can be quite trying. My friends daughter got hers out when she was 8 and did very well, did not talk much and drank alot of cold water. She did not even need her pain medicine.
Good luck,
K.

C., I know the day of my son had a hard time keeping anything down because of the antisia. ( I don't know how to spell it sorry) But that night I was thankful he was keeping popsciles down. My doc. told me to wait till the next day to do icecream. Then for the next day he lived off of ice cream popsciles etc. Really make sure she gets her liquids if she gets dehydriated that could mean another trip to the hospitol. Then by the end of the thrid day he ate some chicken noodle soup. THe next days he ate soft foods like mac-n-cheese. My doc said though by the thrid day what ever he could tolorate he could have. Keep giving her the pain meds don't wait for her to start hurting for at least three days afterwards. I kept my son out of school for a week. Careful of salty foods cause they can sting thats the only time my son complained after the fourth day. Kids bounce back fast and when she does not get sick often you will be happy you made the choice to have them out. Take Care M.

Hi C., my son got his tonsils out in August. When we were at the hospital, he was ready to go home, great mood, etc.-must have been the drugs...as soon as the little guy stood up he started throwing up..and of course blood was in it so it scared him (and ME). We got home and he wanted chicken so bad, he just kept crying-I mean I had to call my mom over because I didn't know what to do. Anyhow, the doctor said to not give ANY ice cream for a few days, he could only have liquids and popcicles. Of course after begging for the chicken he started throwing up again. I found out it was the pain meds they gave him so they switched it a few days later and he was perfect. Stay on top of his pain meds for at least a week-my son begged me on the 6th day that he didn't NEED it anymore..so we skipped it for a few hours, he was really hurting and it was hard to get back under control. At the time it seemed like such a long week (it was over the summer, but was instructed to not go to school for 2 weeks)and now looking back it doesn't seem so bad! He was fine after one week. Good luck!

Two of my three had theirs out and each one was different, my one daughter had them out the week before her 6th birthday and I had her birthday party a week later and she was fine. Make sure you give the pain medication every 6 hours or whatever is prescribed, you don't want them to miss a dose because then it will be harder to get the pain under control, that is IF they are in a lot of main and yes they will sleep a LOT. I found that the yogurt in the tubes were easier than ice cream and I just froze them and the popsicle's that come in the plastic (Flavorice) are better too..less mess! Hope this helps!

Hi Mommy.... I have 6 year old twin girls that both had their tonsils out, one was 2 and the other was 4 when they had the surgery. My oldest now 21 also had hers out when she was 5. BELIEVE me the surgery is nothing compared to 15 years ago. The process is sooooo much faster.(10 minutes to be exact) The recovery time is fast, my girls were up and running the same day, I would say its harder when they are younger (like under age 3), as they can't talk to tell you whats wrong or if they hurt, taking medications and drinking liquids is the most important part of recovery, if the throat stays wet the surgery area heals faster and won't be as sore. So lots of jello, NON RED popsicles, water, juice (non acid) soups. I would say since your daughter is school age a few days would be expected to stay home from school... but I'm sure your Doctor will tell you, he should also give you a return to school note to give the teacher.
Hope this helps, If you need any further info feel free to ask

After you son gets his tonsils out, she won't be able to talk for a few days but can eat lots of soft foods and ice cream. Have her drink alot of water of juices. No pop at all.
