Keratosis Pilaris on Toddler's Face

My 2 1/2 year old was diagnosed with Keratosis Pilaris when she was a baby. It is on her cheeks and noticeable, especially in the winter. I avoid making a big deal of it because I don't want her to develop insecurities around it. Still, it is very noticeable because it's on her face and I'd like to hear from other moms who've had children with KP and what you've done, what's been successful, and/or have your children grown out of it?

We eat very healthy - seriously healthy - so it's not about diet. My husband and I both have KP and it is a genetic condition- mine is very mild and my husband has pronounced KP on his arms. Ours isn't obvious enough to warrant treatment, so we haven't.

What can I do next?

ny son also has this. when he was younger it was on his face, arms and legs but has really reduced on his face and legs. still pretty significant on his arms. doctor said he would outgrow it and so far it is reducing as he ages. i never looked for treatment. We just left it alone.

My son (3yrs old) has it on his face, arms and legs. It's noticeable to me but others usually just think he's excited and has rosy checks. His is also worse in the dry, cold winter weather. We use Eucerin Plus (it has to be the Plus line of Eucerin products) and it helps but doesn't totally clear it up. If we miss putting it on him for a day or two the bumps come right back. Our doctor also recommended Amlactyin (sp?) which apparently you can get from behind the counter but do not need a prescription. We have not tried that since Eucerin works well enough for us and is reasonably priced.

My son has it on his face, went to dermatologist and she said to put lotion on it. She made no big deal of it....which is good. She said they usually grow out of it. So, like you I don't make a big deal out and hope he will grow out of it. We use cetaphil (sp) lotion.

My son has it too - arms and face. People are always commenting on his rosy cheeks. I put aquaphor and/or eucerin on it, though he doesn't like it. My friend in CA's son had it and her dermatologist suggested a glycolic cream - but to wait until he's older b/c it's it's hard on the young skin. At this point, I don't think there is a miracle cure.... Sorry!

My 18 month old dd also has this. I only noticed it coming on this past spring. (She was born with such beautiful skin). I also don't believe it's in the diet as we eat healthy too. (I suppose we haven't tried Gluten Free yet, but I'm not sure Gluten has an effect on KP). I also worry that she'll be self-conscious. Her KP is all the way up her arms and on the tops of her legs (above her knees). The only solution I've heard are Eucerin creams...though I'm skeptical if they do anything at all. I'll be curious to hear what others say...

sorry, don't even know what that is and have wasted enough time on this site that i 'm not going to google it, but just wanted to say, you are right not to make a big deal about it, educate the people she comes in contact with on a regular basis, and teach her and others that everyone is different and that she is still a fun kid.

I have KP on my arms and legs but have never grown out of it. I use a cream called lac-hydracin (I think that's the generic name for it) It does make you sensative to the sun however. I also try to exfoliate when I shower and apply cream right afterwards. To me it's something I deal with and is not that much of a bother.

Our Ped recommended a product called KP Duty that is sold a Sephora. We haven't tried it because of the price tag and our cases are not severe enough. However, she has been told that it does work. So if you are will to pay for it, give it a try and let the rest of know how it works. I'd buy it if I knew it worked. I just didn't want to spend that much and risk a failure.

I am 36 and have it. Was always told I would outgrow it and never did. I have it on my jaw-line, arms, legs, butt and stomach. I truly truly hate it. I have asked about it so many times and there is no cure that I know of - just expensive useless creams. The backs of my arms are very red and people always comment that I have a sunburn. I guess I'm sometimes kindof nasty becase I tell people, "No, its just my skin disease." Anyway, I would try a dermatologist. If they can make it go away, please let me know. I always wonder why they can practically transform peopl to look like someone else, but they can make my damn skin smooth!

My son had it on his arms and legs when he was younger. He also had the cheeks that got kind of red--especially in the winter. He is now 8 and has outgrown it. I don't think there's much you can do to treat it--at least that's what the derm. told us. There IS a lotion he rec'd called Aqua Glycolic. The pharmacy can order it. It's expensive and truthfully, I didn't see any effect. Good luck!
