Keeping Track of Which Side?

Breastfeeders, how did you keep track of which side your baby last fed? I have a friend from another country who has complained she can't ever remember which side to feed her baby when its time for her baby to eat, especially in the middle of the night. I didn't breastfeed - my baby was purely bottle fed from the start - so I don't know what to tell her but I told her I'd ask. If anyone has any hints I could pass along to her, I would appreciate it!

So What Happened?

It looks like I'm going to suggest Milkbands.com, hair bands, twist the strap before snapping, and safety pins to my friend. I think b/c she was a size C before pregnancy and she seemed to triple in size post pregnancy she can't tell by feeling how full she is, the poor thing.

Thanks you guys!

I found that since I am right handed I started on the left, then went to the right. Worked good for me.

It has been a long time since I breastfed, my youngest is 12 now, however, I do remember using safety pins. I would place a safety pin on the side that I last used so I would know what side to start on. I would use a small safety pin and pin it on my bra. It would not protrude and easy to handle.
Hope this helps,
S.

I could often not remember either. I just fed my baby from the side that felt "fullest". It's certainly not something to worry about. It all works out in the end.

I've read about using a safety pin on your bra. Too much work for me. I would just feel them and started my little one on which side was fuller.

Good morning
I breastfed both my babies and used two different methods:
With my first baby I kept a safety pin on the side I was supposed to start with. I put it right on my bra strap and knew right away which side to start on.

With my second baby, I used a "twisted strap" method. As I was putting my bra back together, I would twist before clasping it. It sounds weird - but with a nursing bra, the slight twist at the top as I brought the cup back together really helped!! It never left a bulge and I didn't have to worry about losing a pin or sticking myself at night!

They make nursing bracelets which you can track time and L or R. I just kept a hair tie or rubber band on my wrist and would switch it to the side he was nursing on, so the next time I was awoken in a daze I could just feel for the band on my wrist. Tell your friend to hang in there and good luck.

I could not have done it without my Milk Band!! They are only $6.95 and they have plastic sliding markers to set which time you fed last and you can flip them over to remind you which side you fed from last. One side says "Left" and the other says "Right". You can tell in the middle of the night without even having to turn on the light because one side has letters which are indented and the other, they are raised. There are 5 different colors to choose from too.
It's the best invention ever!! =)

I put a safety pin on the side of by bra that was time to feed. Then I switched it each time. I would just look for the pin and knew which side to start with.

Easiest thing to do it to tie a ribbon around the bra strap of the side you are feeding from. Next time you feed move the ribbon to the other side. I have also heard of others that use a safety pin however in the dark in the middle of the night I would hate to drop it or fumble with it.

Honestly, I go by which one feels fuller if I can't remember. Even after 7 months (currently) I can tell which one is fuller! I have friends that did the bracelet thing, and I tried switching a ring back and forth, but ultimately I relied on the heavy/full feeling.

I tried pinning a safety pin to my bra to tell me which side to start with next and it worked okay. I actually found it easier to put an elastic hair band on my wrist to tell me which side to start with. It was much easier than messing with the safety pin in the middle of the night and I could just feel it on my wrist in the dark.

I keep a hair rubber band on my wrist and every time I feed I switch it to the side that I will need to start on next. some people put safety pins in their bras, but that seems like too much work. the wrist band has worked well for me.

I used the safety pin on the bra strap as well. Switched it while my son was nursing then put him down and went to bed. I knew when he woke again all I had to do was start on the side of the safety pin.

Writing down works too but I always lost/dropped my pens or just forgot.

It helps to have a stretchy bracelet. It is easier to pop over to the other side than a safety pin. :) I used one with my son, this time with my daughter I can just tell.

Honestly, when I couldn't remember, I would just squeeze each one and see which one felt fuller. I didn't feel like it was that big of a deal, though, if I did the same one twice. My son would sometimes do both in one feeding. My daughters are twins and almost always nursed together so it was never an issue with them.

Bracelet - put the bracelet on the wrist of the arm you need to start on. Then move it to the other when the baby finishes.

I have to say I wasn't good at remembering or doing the bracelet. I guessed in the middle of the night. The next morning I would know which one I needed to start with :)

I was told to put safety pin of some type on the side I was to use next or just used... which ever way was easiest to remember and make the change while nursing... After a while I could just tell by the "larger" side.

I use a Milk Band bracelet. It worked great and all you had to do was switch wrists every time and each side of the bracelet has left and right on it. Also you can keep track of how long the baby nursed or what time they need to eat again because there are holes with numbers in the bracelet with little beads to stick in the holes. I love it!!!Check out www.milkbands.com :)

You can buy a bracelet to keep track (I got one free with my pump). I think it's called a milk mate or something like that. Or use a safety pin...stick it on your nursing bra.

I normally feed both sides, however, the second side is usually not as empty as the first since my piglet was hungry when he started. I use a baby saftey pin to mark the second side because I will start with that side first next time. Hope that helps.

I always kept a burp rag on the shoulder that I last fed on, so I knew which one to start with next time. A clothes pin is an easy way and it won't fall off, just attach it to the bra strap of the side u already fed. If I went out I would place an extra breast pad on the side I fed on, so I would have two breast pads on one side and one on the other. Hope this helps:)

I would just put a safety pin on my nursing bra. I would then swap the pin from side to side indicating which side I'd last used. The pin was descreetly placed on the bra/under my clothes so no one need know. I was so large, that there were times (especially in the beginning) that I wore a bra to bed for additional support.

Also, if my breasts felt "full", that was the one I'd use.

Hope that helps.

I have heard of some who wear a rubber band or something on their wrist and switch it as soon as the baby starts feeding so they know for the next time.

My breastfeeding bras had two snaps on each side in order to adjust the tightness. I used to snap them differently - the one that was snapped to the top snap was the first breast to start with. Many times, at night, I would just plain forget out of sleepiness and that was ok. I just started over in the morning.

I'm a night nanny for triplets and what my boss would do when she was breast feeding was to write it down. Like example which breast she used left or right, at what time, if the baby had a dirty diaper. I now do this with the formula with the babies and my personal opinion is that it helps you remember what time they ate and how many ounces especially at nights. Hope it works out for her. Best of luck!

I used a safety pin to keep track. What ever side was being used to feed I would switch to the other side and vice versa. This way I knew which one to feed off of next time. It kept my other boy's involved because they would remind me to change the safety pin. Hope this helps.

Get a cute little pin or use a plain old safety pin attach it to your bra to indicate which side is next. Before each nursing session, move the pin to the other side.

I used a ring to help me remember. I bought a beautiful sapphire ring before my 2nd baby was born as my "nursing ring," and I still wear it today (long after nursing my 3rd is over) and think of it in that way. :)

Suggest that she use a regular stretchy bracelet. She can get one that is pretty (or you can buy her one as a Baby gift and she can wear it later as well). All she has to place it on the side to use the next time, and then at the next feeding slip it off and place it on the other wrist. This way she has something pretty and useful in one and no one will ask "what's that?" all of the time :)
