Has anyone ever successfully kept ice cream and popsicles frozen in a cooler during picnics? If so, what was your MO? Dry ice? Loose ice? Ice in bags?

I'm trying to find a way to keep frozen treats solid for about 1-2 hrs.

What can I do next?

Dry ice is the best solution, however it is not kid friendly.
Might be best to bring fruits that can be kept on ice.
Watermelon kabobs and such like that.
Kids will eat anything on a stick, seriously.

This is not an easy task. Dry ice would be best but it can be very unsafe if someone touches it.

I have a Coleman cooler that plugs into the car to stay cold, it also has an adapter to plug into the house. It will not freeze things but will help keep stuff very cold for long periods of time.

Dry ice in a styrofoam cooler. The treats should be surrounded by crumpled newspaper or the like and the top of the cooler should be taped closed until you are ready to serve. Be careful of the dry ice.

A cooler and ice with a high ice:treats ratio should be fine for 1-2 hours.
I have taken small ice cream cups to a party location and they lasted 2 hours with the ice.

I'd say to buy a small styrofoam cooler (the disposable kind) and put a few pounds of dry ice in there - that will keep them frozen hard. However, you should put this cooler where the kids will have to be served by an adult. You don't want kids playing with dry ice, but with reasonable precautions, it's a great way to keep frozen things frozen at a picnic.

i think the above link was a pop maker also a portable freezer. i think you can make them on site but they only do four at a time?

or you could turn your freezer to extra cold and make them extra hard and pack them on ice. (if you have an extra fridge with a freezer in the garage this would be perfect...we do and most older people do for cokes, beer, extra water ) i think i would put them into a zip lock bag with the ice.

Dry ice as it will keep it cold enough and if you put the items into large(2gal) zip loc bags and use a silcone pit holder glove you won't damage your skin.
