hi Moms,

We eat a lot of whole, fresh foods in our house but I don't think that I'm doing all that I can to maximize the life of my fruits & vegetables. What do you do to make your fruits and veggies last the longest?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I already know what should/shouldn't be refrigerated- what I was more looking for was tips & tricks like- I heard layering moist paper towels between leaf lettuce made it last longer. I heard that those green bags were good but I wanted to get opinions on that before I wasted the money. Tupperware, stuff like that.

My MIL likes the green bags...can't think of what they're called. I think she said she got them at Big Lots (but they're available other places, too). She said they help. I have bought some special tupperware style containers that are designed to keep fruits/veggies fresh longer, but I haven't really noticed a big difference.

In the winter time, I just buy less at a time and go to the store more often (twice a week for fresh foods vs one). I try not to buy things I know will go bad quickly this time of year (berries and grapes mostly). Bananas are still a must for my 14 mo/old, so I buy small bunches. That's really the only thing I've found to really work. I'm curious to hear what others say:)

I always put dry paper towels in with the vegetables to keep them fresher longer.

I do not refrigerate fruits, tomatoes, or avocados. All other produce goes in the fridge. Apples and tomatoes lose their flavor in the fridge, avocados and bananas turn brown.
That said, I buy produce weekly, and haven't had a problem keeping them fresh for that long. Often I buy bananas, tomatoes and avocados unripe and let them ripen on the counter.

We keep them in the fridge. Other than bananas, everything else goes in the fridge to keep them fresher longer. I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but honestly, it's the only thing I can think of! Good luck!

My mom swears by those green bags. You can refrigerate bananas if you have too many ripening. Their skins will turn black but the bananas are fine. I think it helps not to wash your produce until you are going to use it. Wet lettuce leaves rot quickly - at the supermarket try not to get the ones that just had the mister on them. Keep ripe fruit away from the less ripe stuff unless you want it to ripen more quickly. Keep root vegetables cool but not refrigerated (a cool cellar is ideal)
