Keeping 2 Year Old Safe in "Big Girl Bed"

Well, it finally happened, my almost-two-year-old daughter figured out how to climb out of her crib and now won't stay in it. I'm transitioning her to a crib mattress on the floor for the time being. My question is, what do I do to keep her safe in her bedroom? I'm worried about lamps and her CD player plugged in, drapes (no cords or anything, but still worried that she'll pull on them), a ceramic piggy bank and picture frame. She can currently reach all of this stuff. Do I "baby proof" her room, or do we take our chances and live and learn? Are there any hazards I should be aware of that could seriously hurt her?

Hey there,

Another mom told me once you take out the base that the mattress rests on and put the mattress on the floor with the sides of the crib down. Some cribs won't work that way but it buys you time!

Good luck!

All of the things you mentioned could be "potential" hazards....but then again so could anything in any house if used in the wrong way!

I would plug up the outlets, move the breakables, etc. Since she's a "climber" make sure anything like dressers/bookcases are attached to the wall so she can't pull them over on herself. And get a video monitor so you can see what's going on in there at all times! Good luck.

Hello, I have two girls a 2 year old and a 4 year old and I always baby proof every thing ! you have to! So many things can happen and in a blink of an eye.
You should buy the plugs for all your out lets in your room bathroom for every one you do not use. You should have the glass piggy bank put up high where they can not reach it for two reason they can get to the change inside and break it and cut them self. Note, tape all cords together and buy a cover for them. Kid's will pick up everything so you have to keep everything clean at all times. I find very helpful the little gates that you can put in the door way that holds them back until about 3 years old then once you are out of the TWO stage thing get better! But I still have a TWO year old my self and know it is not easy ! Trust me it is better to be safe then Sorry.....

Hello momma,
i have a 2.5 year old and when he turned 2 he had also figured out how to climb out of his crib. We now have him a a twin size bed, we went to the store and he picked out the bedding, curtains and other things to make him seem like a "big boy". I bought a body pillow to put on the outside of the bed and the bed is against a wall at the head and side so we just have to worry about the bottom and one other side. In the 6 months that he has been in the bed he has fallen out maybe 2 times. we also bought a waterproof mattress pad for diaper leaks and/or potty training. i have all the stuff that is breakable on his dresser where he cannot reach them. the outlets i put the safety plugs in and only use the outlets that are behind his dresser. i hope it all works out for you.

I would definitely plug/baby proof any electrical outlets that she can reach, and maybe move the lamp and CD player to a plug she can't reach. Perhaps behind a dresser etc....I would tie up the curtains for the time being and remove any breakables that she can reach for now. You'd be amazed at how quickly they can get into things when left to discover on their own. Good luck. Eventually you'll be able to put things back where they 'belong'.

Baby proof it. You never know what she is going to do in a sleepy state. She could simply bump into something and knock something over. Just about everything you mentioned I have in my baby's room up high on wall shelves way out of her reach. Except a lamp, I don't have anything that plugs in. I have a rechargable nightlight. Now all of that being said, my child...who is a climber....has never tried to touch anything in the middle of the night. She gets up and comes straight to our room. Good Luck with the transition. =)

I would just wait and see how she does. My son had no problems going to a big boy bed. He never got out, never played with anything. He has been great! I know not all kids are like that and im sure my daughter will be a lot more tricky, but i would just try it and see what happens. Does she mess with the cords or piggy bank or anything during the day? If not then she should be fine at night. If your concerned just put things out of her reach that your worried might hurt her and she will be just fine. Hope it goes well for you!

My daughter moved to a toddler bed at 22 mos when she started leaning over and falling out of her crib (never climbing..but falling). After she broke her arm doing her "crib-nastics"(determined weeks later, hairline fracture of her forearm and too late to do anything but support it for the pain she was still having..that was our indication there was an issue)...the second night in a row of the falling was enough! We already had the toddler bed in the room...all her "babies" slept on it! But she wouldn't get out of it unless I came in to get her.

But I still worried...so the room was childproofed..cords behind the dresser..dresser anchored to the wall. mostly it was toys in there anyway, so it was pretty easy. But her doorway was almost right at the top of the steps, so we put a safety gate in her doorway at night, as I worried about those few times she did get out of bed (if she wasn't feeling well, etc)..that in the dark, half asleep, she may fall down the steps. If she wandered into the gate, I would hear that. If she sort of sleep-walked thru the house or fell down the steps....well I didn't want to consider those possibilities.

I would hide the cords, cover the outlets and get the breakable/choking sort of things out of reach. Anchor things she might climb or tip if the climbing is a concern. And consider a decent doorway gate if theri a chance of night wandering....soon enough you will be able to alter things but for now I would err on the side of caution......

Good luck!

I would go out and buy the auto close outlets (you can get them from Buy, Buy Babby (3 pack is... 10.00 or so). They are great. I use them in any room that has visable outlets. You do not want to take a chance on that at all. I'd also babyproof her room if you feel she will be spending some time in there without out. Lamps are very easy to knock down and she can get hurt so I'd take that out (if at all possible) or block it in a way where it wont fall on her.

If you spend a lot of time in her room with her and let her know what's appropriate and what's not, you should be good, but I personally wouldn't take a chance with lamps and outlets (and cords).

We took out all that stuff that could be broken or hurt her. In addition, we anchored her large furniture to the wall incase she decided to climb it. It may sound bad, but we also locked the door from the outside so she couldn't get out. I was afraid she would wake before us, get out of her room and wonder the house unsupervised. We kept the baby monitor in there though so she was never awake long before we came to get her.

Be prepared for all the drawers to be emptied many, many times and for her to fall asleep anywhere but the bed. This will loose it's novelty and she will sleep in her bed again. Good luck!
