Karo Not Working for Constipation

I posted a few weeks ago regarding Ellie's tummy troubles. We went to the doc and got reflux meds which seem to be working fine but she's still having trouble going to the bathroom. We've tried molasses and karo but they're not working. I'm desperate for something to work. The karo seems to make it softer but she's still straining quite a bit to get it out and usually ends up in a screaming fit. She's currently on soy. We're getting ready to try some gentle formula for gassy and fussy babies today and we're just praying that helps. We're at our wits end on what to do for her. I'd say it's colic but she's crying in pain. Also, she's not eating well. It's a huge fight to get her to eat 2 1/2- 3oz. every 4 hours and the feeding usually takes 30-40 minutes...for that little food. It's really frustrating. She seems like she wants to eat but when she starts eating she starts squirming a lot and grunting/growling and passes a lot of gas. I personally think it's just because it hurts her tummy and gets the constipation stuff irritated. PLEASE HELP! I can't handle much more screaming. I also gave her a little prune and apple juice mix to see if that'd help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys. After a day of not eating we were told to take her to urgent care where they also suggested suppositories and prune juice. They also said to take her off soy and give her the gentle, partially broken down formula. Thanks for your help. Having this resource is beyond a blessing!

We did the prune juice too but diluted a little bit (we didn't want him to blow out...lol). When he got a little older he started refusing those bottles b/c they were "different" so we started calling his bottles Vanilla and Chocolate...no problems now! And imagine! He prefers Chocolate to Vanilla now (he he he).

Another thing to try is little tummies laxative drops. Haven't had to use them too much but when I've really needed them they have worked wonders!

My son had similiar problems--it's so hard to see them strain! I found I had to take him off everything with rice in it--alot of mixed grain cereals for babies and those stage 3 meals had it in it. Take a look at what she's been eating. Adding oatmeal, lots of veggies and especially pears helped him. Also I found 100% apple juice FIRST thing in the morning helped for some reason when everything else didn't. Hope this helps!

Hi B.,
I suggest Aloe Vera juice, it works great for constipation and gas. I used it for my now 2 yr old when he was an infant. If you are interested in more information on what I use, let me know and I can send it to you. Aloe Vera Juice is also great for soar throats and for maintaining good digestion.
My kids like Strawberry/Kiwi and Cranberry apple flavors.

I know she is little but you might ask your doctor about giving her a little apple or prune juice in with her bottle each time.

You might try nursing her (unless you are taking meds that can pass through breastmilk). Breastmilk is the PERFECT food for babies. Even if you think you don't have any, TRY. Your body will produce what is asked. Relactation is possible, but you need to nurse A LOT. My son has never had any tummy issues or constipation.

Have you tried soy formula? My baby had a horrible time with his tummy all the way around and he ended up being alergic to milk. Worth a shot. You can get Nestlee Good Start in a small can to test it. I'd imagine if she's constipated she won't want to eat anyways.
Good Luck and my heart goes out to you.

The only time that Karo syrup failed to do the trick, we resorted to using an infant suppository. I would check with a doctor first, but it immediately helped my daughter (literally within a minute, she unloaded like I couldn't believe a baby was capable of doing...haha). It's not fun for mom or baby, but it's much less fun when she's in pain that she can't relieve on her own. I hope she's better soon!

B.,

I feel your pain. I have a 4 yr old daughter and it seems we have had this issue off and on all her life. Finally her peditritian suggested MIRALAX. It's now over the counter and is tasteless and non habit forming. They suggest mixing the powder with water and then adding it to milk or any other liquid that does not have cardonation. Hope this helps :-) A.

I don't know if you've tried the Good Start Formula that's packaged in the green label but it is WONDERFUL!!! I'm pretty sure it's called Good Start Natural Cultures. It has the good bacteria which is good for tummy problems and such. Good Luck!

Once I put my son on this formula his poo started looking just like the poo of a breastfed baby.

He was still crabby but his poos were pleasantly passed.

I used to give 1 oz prune juice w/ 1 oz apple juice and 1 oz water. This works wonders! My daughter is 4 now and still needs prune/apple juice 3-4 times a week for her to be regualar.

Hi B.,

Acidophilus powder in her formula should help. Start with a little and build up. It sounds like she does not have the natural digestive flora to break down and digest her food. Also, you might want to consider making your own goat milk formula if you aren't able to use breastmilk. There is a nutritious recipe for it for babies on the website www.westonaprice.com. My friend's son thrived on it after she was unable to nurse him and he didn't do well on soy formula. Soy is actually really hard to digest, anyway. My friend's son is very healthy and even has no allergies even though both his mom and dad have very bad allergies.

Good luck! I know it is very hard to feel helpless because you see your baby suffer!!!

My son had trouble going at about 5 mths - we tried everything. Finally went to a specialist that started us on Mylanta Supreme. Can't remember exact dosage (it was about 4.5 years ago) - maybe like a tsp to start with a day.... I think we worked our way up to maybe 3 tsp/day. Anyways - it did the trick. Got him going again and we stayed with the Mylanta Supreme to get him going regular and then gradually backed off it. Ask your ped. about it for correct dosage.... good luck.

My son was colic, constipated, had acid reflux, and never never never stopped crying. We tried every formula, including the gentle-ease by enfamil and soys. We finally switched to Dr Browns bottles, broke down and bought the Nutramigen formula (liquid gold in our house) and our Dr told us to try Krondremul. The Nutramigen with the Krondremul worked wonders and he was never constipated again. It was so easy, two teaspoons in his milk once a day.

We did a little prune juice mixed with the formula and it worked but it took a couple of days to work. Also I have stuck a thermometer with vasoline up to dislodge a hard poopy. If she was older I would say try Miralax but I don't know about it at that young age you would have to ask the doctor. Call your doctor and just keep asking questions until you get it solved. Don't be afraid to bug them.

Another couple of things we tried were warm baths, tummy rubbing and leg messages.

Good luck
