We just relocated here from Kansas City. My husband was transferred to Gary (we found this out on July 30th) and we have moved everything and everyone in 3 weeks. We have been in our new house about a week. My eldest is going to Ben Franklin and my youngest will start pre-school on the 3rd. Before I moved I mamasourced in the Portage area and they had some neat mom's groups. Unfortunately I can't find the email addresses. I would sure love to meet some other moms in the area. The very worst thing about moving is the complete feeling of bewilderment and confusion. I don't know where anything is in any of the grocery stores and even a trip to Walmart takes forever. I know they are supposed to be similiar but they really aren't. So far I love the town but could use some help finding a Family Doctor etc.. Thank you all so much in advance.

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
Associated Pediatricians is the place to go for your children. There are 6 doctors there with fabulous backgrounds. My husband and I go to Dr. James Taylor in Valpo. He's a doctor who has been around for a long time. He's very good. We hardly ever have a wait when we go in. That's what I like best. I have a 4 year old daughter and 10 month old twins, so I don't have much time to sit and wait. It does take time to get used to new stores, but it gets easier. Welcome to the area!

L.,

Hello! Sorry that I don't have any ofthose email addresses that you are looking for, but did want to share with you that we also have our oldest at Ben Franklin in Valpo - - 6th grade - -so that school is new to us as well. So far, extremely impressed with the middle school. Have 2 in elementary at Cooks Corners and that is a fabulous school. Youngest one is in preschool / daycare at Miracles in Valpo. I'm sure you will get yourself settled in before you know it especially with the activities through the school and in the community. In case no one has mentioned it to you, this coming weekend is Popcorn Festival. Hope you and your family are able to enjoy it. There is a parade on Saturday along with lots of other things going on in the downtown area. Enjoy and good luck with the adjustment!!

Hi L. and welcome to Valpo. I would also like to find some type of moms' group. My husband and I have been married for almost 10 year and have a 7 1/2 year old son. I'm also a stay-at-home mom, but I've been feeling a bit isolated lately.
We live near Valpo. Good luck.

Welcome to Valpo...it's a great little town to be in. I've been in Valpo for 6 years, but have lived and grown up in NW Indiana my whole life. Valpo has a great school system, a great parks department, YMCA (brand new one set to open up some time early 2009), and lots of different kid-friendly activities and community programs available. Shopping is convient and you're not far from all the other "stuff" that's not in Valpo. On a personal note for doctors offices, Associated Pediatricians is fantastic! They're right next to McDonalds on Calumet and all of the doctors are really good. I'm not sure about regular family doctors, but there are many to choose from. Town and Country supermarket is better than Wal-mart or Wiseway for your regular grocery needs. I think our wal-mart doesn't have good produce or meat, and Wiseway is just really expensive, so T & C on Calumet is a good place to shop. If you want to meet other moms, hanging out at the parks is an easy way. I know when I take my 3 year old to Butterfly Meadow (north on Campbell) I'm always finding another mom to strike up a conversation with. Good luck...you'll be just fine.
