Okay mama's, I need your help. I'm 6 weeks pregnant and today it hit me...morning sickness. I can't even concentrate all I can think about is how sick I feel. I do have to laugh...it feels like I have a major hangover and if I just could throw up I'd feel a lot better! :) I need help, what can I do to make this nausea go away? I have to be able to function at work!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Congratulations on being pregnant! I felt so yucky too! My dr told me I could take a unisom at night. I took half each night so I didn't feel groggy the next day. It really helped. The dr also said to keep saltines by the bed and haave a couple before you get out of bed. I took ginger capsules when it got bad and one pregnancy got zofran from the dr. One friend had great success with vitamin B6 and another with smelling mint. I also never took a prenatal because the amount of iron made me feel so sick. I too stuck with Flinstones. Experiment a little and hopefully you will find something that works for you!

Ginger ale. I also went to the dr and she gave me this wonderdrug that's completely safe for the baby but used to treat the nausea in cancer patients. I don't recall the name, but it really helped me have a lot more "good days". I only wish I would have had it for my first pregnancy!!!!

To tell you the truth, when I had morning sickness, I tried everything to avoid vomiting.
Ginger ale, crackers, fruit, ice chips, mint But then I discovered if I got up, brushed my teeth, vomit and then brush my teeth, I could then get on with my day..

I even was sick while in actual labor.. Freaked the LDN completely out, but my husband reassured her, "Oh she does this every morning.. she will be fine."

Like Laurie A... I made it a point to throw up after I brushed my teeth the first time and felt better (usually)

With my 1st pregnancy, I LOST weight (1st trimester) because I couldn't keep anything down! There were 2 things I could keep down... Blueberry bagels and hummus w/pita bread, heavy in garlic sauce... Oh and I ate a case of popcicles a week. That was it... The whole pregnancy. I vomited violently during labor as well. Good thing labor was FAST! I did manage to go from vomiting every day to at least just feeling queasy once I hit late 2nd trimester. Only 'uked' after the first teeth brushing then.

The only thing that I did differently once I hit the 2nd trimester was go to chewable vitamins (Flintstones).

My 2nd pregnancy... I was the 'glowing' pregnant woman. I felt better than ever. Never felt sick. Not once. Never took prenatals. Only the folic acid and Flintstones. Funny thing is... I 'uked' a few times while in labor. During the 'transition' stage.

Both kids turned out super healthy.

If _anything_ sounds good, eat it, no matter what it is. I survived morning sickness with a few tuna fish sandwiches for breakfast, and a mountain of pad thai. Eat slowly, because you want to make sure that you can keep it down. But I found that generally my body had a decent sense of what I could eat.

Also, keep ak-mak crackers next to your bed. They're even drier than saltines, if such a thing is imaginable. I found that snacking on a few before bed with a few sips of water helped me not to feel quite so ill in the morning.

Finally - if you're taking a prenatal vitamin, take it on a full stomach, at night. If you can't keep down the prenatals, switch to a chewable vitamin. I took no prenatals my second pregnancy and felt much better.

Good luck!

My acupuncturist suggest Pepperment Essential oil on my wrist. Two fingers down from your hand on the main tendon. Smell it throughout the day as you feel sick. This combined with small snacks and water has helped me a ton.

Zofran.

Difficulty is alot of insurance companies don't want to pay for it. It was like a grand for the 14 I did get. They think you should take phenegran (prometizine and about a dozen other names it has, it's very old) which is also a sedative on top of an anti-nausea med, plus reglan (which makes your stomach empty faster so it stops vomiting or the frequency) Anyways, My insurance company would give me 14 for every 16 days. They said that basically would cover work. After that they thought I should take phenegran. So apparently the rest of the time they required me to be sedated with 2 other elementary age children. I had to get doctors approval even for that and had to pay my co-pay every 16 days just to get that much. I thought my insurance company terrible and this was rare...

Now my niece is pregnant and another insurance company she has will give her 1 per day. AND she has to get doctor's approval for each script she fills. Which her doctor goes to that length but mine would have gotten sick of it so I'm glad I didn't have to do that. Again they told her she could get phenegran as well.

Plus I was in a mommy group and I was definitely not in the minority. Maybe this is just in my area? Who knows. But it was freakin terrible. I think Zofran works better plus it's a cat B and phenegran a c. That is how stupid they are. But it's all business and they don't want to pay the grand for it vs. Phenegran which is a measly few dollars.

So I'm just saying don't be surprised if this happens to you and if it does I'm sorry. Just remind yourself most are done sometime in the first trimester.

Sea Bands wrist bands helped me alot, lemonade, seltzer water, melons, protein foods, ginger ale, and papaya extract tablets. If it gets too bad, see if the doctor will prescribe Zofran.

I had Hyper Emesis when I was pregnant with my daughter..morning sickness gone totally wacked out (I was on IV's for the first 5 months or so cuz I couldn't suck on an ice cube and keep it down..literally).

But crackers and a few sips of water..before you even leave your bed. Doesn't ahve to be saltines..any plain sort of cracker. Cheese Its worked for me before things got so bad, and once things got a bit better. I pretty much had Cheese its with me al the time and a bottle of water, but thats my fave cracker!

Like another poster said..eat small things often, never ever let your tummy get empty. Plain things generally worked better for me when I was able to eat. Lots of toast and bread and bagels (no stuff on them), etc. Nibble alot and don't move fast. Get up from your chair slow and give yourself a minute to be steady, etc. Sipping gingerale can help (the ginger in there). Schwepps worked best for me?? More real ginger in there, perhaps?

Good luck. I had that hangover feeling for far too long and the IV's sucked..alot (I still worked most of the time, hooked up at night and just didn't eat for several months, other than slight nibbles here and there...)

It will likely pass...work with it as it comes! You will prevail!

I had really bad morning sickness with my first, my daughter. I could only eat crackers, they settle my stomach enough to function but still had it bad. I through up for my first 5 months, it was HORRIBLE... I personally would have a problem taking any medication for it, I'm a more natural person. Congrats on the baby!!!

I had a severe form of "morning" sickness called Hyperemesis and needed prescribed meds to help me (threw up every hour for the first few weeks and never felt relief, couldn't keep anything down, lost weight, was a mess!). Here are things to try if you don't have a severe case:

Unisom/B6 combo

Seabands for your wrists

Keeping crackers by your bedside and eating a couple when you first wake up in the morning before getting out of bed

Lots of extra rest

If nothing makes you feel better see your OB dr. and try and get a prescription for an anti-nausea medicine, there are several you can try (Zofran was the one that ended up being my saving grace.) Hopefully you don't get to that point though! When I was about 16 weeks along I started feeling better and no longer needed the medicine. Good luck!

Ginger ale, crackers, and LOTS of little snacking. Slowly eat a cracker if you feel it coming on, really take your time and let your tummy settle. Cheese cubes are good to munch on too. Cola (like Coke, not Pepsi) has something in it that settles tummys (ever seen cola syrup at the pharmacy?), but the caffiene isn't great when you're preggers. They also make 'prego pops', lollipops to help ward off nausea, but I've only seen then, never tried them. Congrats and feel better! :)

What worked for me was to combine Proteins with Carbs. The combo works well. I would have half a toasted bagel with peanut butter every night before bed and every morning, first thing (best if you can have it "delivered" while you are still in bed and then rest a few more minutes before slowly getting up.) Keep food in your stomach at ALL times - nibble all day! And when it's bad - if something looks/sounds good, go for it, right away! I had the "all-day/night sickness" with both kids for about 20-22 weeks - I discovered that little tricks would work for a little while, but then I'd get queasy at the thought of them - like the saltines, bread, ginger... But the Protein/Carb combo and keeping your tummy from being empty worked well in the long run for me, both times.

I heard that ginger root helps nausea. I never tried it when I was pregnant, but maybe it's worth a try.

Also, in general - eat often - never let your stomach get completely empty b/c the feeling of hunger triggers nausea. Also, you are supposed to drink ONLY in between meals (very hard to do, but I heard it helps prevent nausea). So, drink before or after a meal and don't let yourself ever get too hungry. Good luck!

I had "all-day" sickness, not just morning :-) I had this constant nausea that lasted all day. But it was not terrible. I only threw up once, and it was not that much.

You will find for yourself what works best for you. For me, it was
-Lemon flavored hard candy
-Honey with sprinkled black pepper (weird, right? My mom used to give this to us when we were nauseaus)
-Crackers
-Ginger

I haven't read all the replies, so I apologize if this was already mentioned. But go get a tube of Boiron's Nux Vomica. I find it at Valley Natural in Burnsville, but it may be somewhere in Mpls. They are little sublinguals that you take 6 of and put them under your tongue. They are to aid in helping naseau (?). Hope you can find some relief - also talk to your MW/ dr about possible solutions to help you.

the only way my morning sickness felt better is if I constantly had a little bit od some carbs in my tummy - cereal, baked potato, bread, crackers, etc. ALL DAY. I ate them in very small portions, but I had to have SOMETHING in my stomach at all times, or else the nausea was too much!

My solution was a can of flat, room-temperature Coke. I don't even like Coke! But each morning I opened a can, and took tiny sips all through the morning. By one o'clock I could eat breakfast, and keep it down.

Good luck!

Preggie Pop Drops!!! Or Preggie Pops whichever you prefer. I live in AZ and they sell them at the maternity stores here, not sure if they do in MN but it's worth a look. If not, I know you can buy them on Amazon.com and from their website, http://www.threelollies.com/. They work amazingly well and you can throw a handful in your purse or pocket to take with you wherever you go!

As a side note, we discovered these with my first pregnancy and the lady who worked at the maternity store said they could barley keep them in stock because all the college kids kept buying them to use as hangover remedies (yes they work that well)!!!!

Nothing really makes it go away totally, but you can help yourself feel better. Eat snacks a lot throughout the day so your stomach is never empty. Crackers and granola bars are good to eat before you even get up in the morning. For some reason, gum helped me a lot. Google "morning sickness" and you'll get a million things to try!
