My husband and I both have cell phones. We have been toying with the the idea of either switching our home phone (traditional land line) to internet phone, or maybe just getting rid of it. It has me curious. What is your phone situation?

What can I do next?

Ha, my husband just got a house phone after being so sick worry and tired that I wouldn't pick up my cell phone.
If I leave it upstairs I don't always would hear it downstairs, if I forgot to charge and die I wasn't even aware, etc.
So now I have 2 phone numbers for him to call at the most annoying times (aka bathroom)

YAY, how exiting! (sarcasm sign in here)

Just a cell phone. Most of the people we call are long distance so having a home phone just doesn't make sense.

We have both. I have 3 older kids 12-9, and they have people that call the house for them. I'm not about to buy them all cell phones, nor do I want them tying up my cell phone.

Two years ago, we dropped our land line. It was TERRIFYING.

And yet, nobody cared. The only difference it made was $40 a month less.

Find out if you have enhanced 911 in your area, and be sure your kids can call 911 on a cell. Otherwise, why have it? It's just habit.

We have cell phones and a home phone thru Comcast that the kids use. We got fed up with them always borrowing our phones to call their friends and leaving them places! As part of our cable bill it is not too much per month. But I don't think it works when the power goes out.

Both. I'm not tied to my cell phone and my SD's phone is always lost/uncharged/broken. We figured that as long as we had children in the home, we wanted a landline for emergencies. We feel safer that way. We have a large "local" area and our phone plan allows us to make the long distance calls we normally do to our friends and family.

We both have cell phones. No home phone, haven't had one since I loved out of my parents house when I was 19! Our phones are smart phones and have full internet access, so we don't even use a computer...

we just had cell phones for the longest time, but now the cable company wanted to jack up our rates for just having internet and cable.... so we added the land line to keep the prices down. we don't ever use it tho. any time it rings, we know it's either a wrong number or a bill collector that found our number.

just cell. We had vonage for a while, but it was just because my mom would come and stay and she didn't have a cell to call us, emergency personnel, etc. now that she does, we don't need it:)
The only people who ever called on land line was my husband's grandmama, telemarketers and wrong numbers - LOL!

We have both. Our land line is through our cable company and is bundles in with our cable and internet. We use it mostly to call family that is out of town with the free unlimited long didtance. Also our monitored home security system requires a land line. I like having the land line in the event of an emergency since they can eaily trace the call if needed and I don't have to worry wether or not our cell phones are charged. It all depends on what your needs and budget are.

Cells and land lines. We've been considering dropping the land line...but for some reason I just feel that we should keep it. Why is that I wonder?

the majority of the time we only use cell phones, even though we have a house line. The house line is mainly used for the school and my grandma. Our cells are long distance call from her house phone even though we only live 10 minutes from (because when we moved two states we just never changed our cell numbers to this area code)...

Other wise we would only have the cells.

We don't have a landline anymore - we added a third line to our current plan using another cell phone and had our landline number transferred to that cell. It's worked great so far!

We don't have cell service at our house ( even though there is a town at the end of town... makes sense, doesn't it!) so we have to have a home phone.

I only have a tracfone as I don't use it much, only if something would happen while in the car. My husband has a straight talk so he can get the internet and has something to do on his breaks at work.

We have cell phones but also got OOMA which is an internet phone. OOMA has your address on file so if you call 911 they display your address for the dispatcher. it cost us 99 and 40 to keep our same number but we've been saving the 40 per month on what our landline used to cost every month.

We still have the land line but I only got a cell phone last year. We had a major tornado that went through town not so long ago and cell phones didn't work well for a while afterwords. I was glad to have the phone at home to reach my family and make sure they were okay.

We just use cell phones. I have a cellphone with a plan that I have to pay for. My husband's phone is provided through his work and then I have a phone that stays at home or goes with my 10-year-old daughter that we do "Pay as you go" on.

We don't miss the land line at all.

Remember if you go with internet phone it won't work if the electricity is out OR if your internet service goes down.

We only have cell phones. Our land line was just too much money for the amount of use. We have no problems with it. The only thing that I am not sure how to handle is what if the kids need a phone for an emergency situation in regards to one of us not being able to help. We keep our phones out of the children's reach and do not allow them to play with them. At $200+ each, I am not about to let my 3 and 5 year old use them as a toy. They have enough of their own real toys. We taught our children my husband's phone number as our home number because he is the more reliable one when it comes to answering the phone.

Before you drop your landline be sure to check with 911. With a land line, they are able to locate your address and get to you. This is especially important if you can dial but are unable to talk (choking, intruder, etc). Or if your child calls for you, but cannot remember the address or panics...I'm not sure if they can track a cell the same way...

I am seriously going to go in the next couple of months and set up land lines again. My cell is constantly dead or needing to be found cause the kids had it playing applications.

I want to go back to a basic land line and since we get SSDI it will be less than $10 per month.

Well we have a different take then most people but we will never get rid of our home line...it is so very important to have a home phone, especially one that can withstand a power outage at least for a few hours...Accidents happen and can happen at very inconventient times!

My husband and I both have cell phones and have chosen to keep our home phone also. Our kids our young, 7 and 3, and the 7 y/o knows when/how to dial 911. We are not sure he'd know how to unlock (or even find) one of our cell phones if need be. We pay maybe $15 a month to keep the land line. We also live out of the city and sometimes our cell phone coverage is spotty, at best.

We have both land line and cell phone line. I will have to keep both because my wife doesn't answer her cell phone most of the time. The only reason she still has a cell phone is so if she has an emergency she can call from beside the road.

Our cell phone coverage at home is none to two bars, so that is another reason to have a land line.

Good luck to you and yours.

We are cell only.
I haven't had a landline since I moved out of my parents' house after college. I shared an apt with a girlfriend and we decided not to bother getting a landline to save money. When I eventually got engaged to my husband and moved in with him, he didn't have a landline either.
Now we have a 2 year old and I kind of feel like we "should" have a landline, but I just can't bring myself to sign up for another bill each month.
Cell phones can get misplaced, or run out of juice. I worry about having to scramble to find and/or charge my phone if there is an emergency. And of course there is the power outage issue. We get a lot of tropical storms and hurricanes here and that is a concern.
My husband thinks I'm just being paranoid....we usually keep our cells in the same place(s) and are good about keeping them charged...and he points out that in a hurricane, the phone lines could very well go down as well. AND, we have a power inverter for the car that could charge our cells if need be.
So between his reassurance, and again, that monthly cost, I have not gotten a landline.
Good luck with your decision!

We just have cells.

We live on a convergence of 4 area codes (so even local = long distance, and half our calls are 'real' long distance. Dropping the landline saves us a couple hundred a month.

We have had cells only for about 7 or 8 years.

My husband and I both have cell phones but we also still have our land-line. I refuse to get rid of the land-line, even if it would save a few bucks, as long as I have children that often are at home with no other phones. My land-line has about as basic of service as you can get - it can't even make long distance calls. In fact, the reason I first got a cell phone many years ago was just to save on long distance because my family lives far away. In my opinion it's whatever you're comfortable with and can afford. Good luck!!

We have both and will to continue to have a landline. For now, the sound quality is so much better, as someone else said, when you need a landline the most - in times of emergencies - it's available when cells go down.

Here in the NY metro area most of the Gen-Y'ers and many of the Gen-X'ers don't get a landline to avoid the $100 installation charge and the need to change phone numbers when you move. But the quality of cell service is spotty in the city (all the tall buildings) and there are still areas in the suberbs where there's very limited cell service.

And after 9/11 and the 2003 blackout I appreciate having a landline. Ours is through one of the local TV/internet providers (we have it bundled) and there's a 5 hour battery back up on the phone connection which we think in most instances will be fine.
