I am looking to find some experiences from women who gave birth at Johns Hopkins Bayview. This is the only hospital my doctor delivers and its a hospital where I have never been nor do I have any friends who have been there (unlike St. Joe's and GBMC which have great reviews from friends).

Thank you in advance for your help!

What can I do next?

Hey kristin,

I actually did give birth to my second son a month ago at Bayview. I had no problems what so ever. If I had any issues ALL of my nurses were there for me no questions asked. I had a planned section that actually turned into and emergency really fast, and even with that thrown into the mix the people were great.

i am truly sorry to all the ladies/families that had any issues there, thats not at all a time to be left to take care of yourself etc.

I hope this helps. At any rate good luck with your baby!
Be blessed.

I haven't heard anything about Bayview either. I can tell you that what you experience at any hospital will depend on the time of year and how busy they are (for some reason, more babies are due in the summer and fall then in the winter and early spring)and the staffing. I had both my babies at St Joes. The first time, the postpartum care was awful, the light in my room flashed uncontrollably and no one would fix it, it took forever to get pain meds, and no one checked me or the baby for over 12 hours the last day I was there, I wondered if they had thought I was discharged already. My husband and I swore we wouldn't go back there for #2. Well, I loved my OB and had such a great delivery that I didn't want to find a new OB, so I decided to give St Joes another try, and it was so much better, I didn't want to leave. So my point is that it just really depends. If I were you I would take a tour, ask questions that really matter to you, like if they have private rooms, when do they move you to postpartum, will the take the baby to the nursery if you need a break, do they have lactation consultants, what is the staffing like, etc. I am not sure if they have a NICU and what level of care it offers, but that would be something that I would definately ask about. I used to work at a hospital that had no NICU, and even though no one wants to plan the worst, these women would have complications and their baby would have to be flown out somewhere else, a problem for both the mom and the baby. Then find out what means the most to you.

Good luck and enjoy the pregnancy.

I didn't deliver at Bayview, I delivered at Sinai. But I have never heard any one give a recommendation for Bayview. They simply aren't know for that service. I always recommend.. GBMC,Sinai,St Joes,Mercy, and Franklin Sqaure. Any way, try not to worry about that and enjoy your pregnancy. Hope you have a good experience.

I have not personally delivered my children at Bayview hospital, but the health center I worked at for 6 1/2 years used Bayview for our OB patients' deliveries. I can tell you that the OB physicians (at least the ones that worked at my center) were very knowledgeable and had many years of experience in the field. Bayview does MANY deliveries each year, but I think they are a bit under-staffed, which may explain the bad experience that the previous mom described to you.

Schedule a tour of the facility for yourself or try asking some of the other moms in the waiting room at your current OB office if they have a previous experience at Bayview. If you get bad reviews or you're simply not comfortable, switch OBs. There are many good OBs in Baltimore and you're still very early in your pregnancy. Good luck!

Hi Kristin,
Unfortunately I do not have good reviews to give you. I had 2 of my children at Bayview because my husband was in the military and it was Bayview or Bethesda which was too far for me to go for all my prenatal having several small children so I had to go to Bayview. I did not have good experiences there either time. Their labor nurses were nice enough but the nurses I had after giving birth were not good at all. I could write a book on the problems I had there but I will just give you a few examples. And for the record when they sent me a survey after them I did write down all of my complaints with my name and number and never heard anything. The first time I was there, I was given a room with no remote to the tv and told I couldn't get one cuz people just steal them ( the tv is up on the ceiling so not very easy to change channels), I had flies in my refrigerator and my air conditioning wasn't working well. I was put in the room about 8 in the morning and it took me until 7 that night to get moved. I waited EVERY time I would ask for my pain medication for hours, I could never get a nurse to answer my calls when I would ring for them. I begged my Dr. to discharge me when my daughter was 24 hours old. The second time I was there, I had an emergency c-section and my daughter ended up in the NICU. My husband had to come home to our other children and our basement was flooding so I was there alone. I could get noone to give me info. on my daughter, I was so medicated and with IV's I couldn't just go down to the NICU myself...they finally came and took my catheder out and when I rang for somebody to help me to the bathroom since it was my first time out of bed, nobody came so I had to get up myself and hope for the best. Once again had a problem getting pain medication, a drink, or anything else. Having 6 children and my other 4 were born at other hospitals and my mom is a labor and delivery nurse I know that this is not the problems you should be having just after giving birth. It is a very helpless feeling being in a hospital and you can't even get help from a nurse. I just had my last daughter 3 months ago at Franklin Square and it was such a better experience. I would highly recommend looking into having your baby somewhere else. Childbirth is such a happy occasion and should not be ruined by being in a place that causes you stress. I would be happy to talk to you about this if you want, I just tried to give you some examples of the bad care that they give. I wish you the best and hope wherever you deliver will provide wonderful care and you will have a good experience.
