JFF: If You Could Choose Your Child's Sex, Would You?

I know many that would love to choose the sex of thier children, but do you think it is okay that technology is making it possible? In my opinion it is not up to us which gender we are given to love and raise.

What can I do next?

No way! I also believe its not for us to decide....

And could you imagine what would be next. Parents wanting to pick hair color, eye color...etc. Oh and not to mention the fights between couples because the wife wants this and the husband wants that.

I think the technology is okay especially when used to screen out possible sex-based genetic anomalies/diseases. I personally would not choose to have only male or female embryos implanted but I don't really have a problem with other people/couples choosing the sex of the embryo.

Under no circumstance. I choose to play human, not play God!

It's a slippery slope...using technology to choose things our bodies naturally choose themselves. It's not a door I feel comfortable being opened.

I'm a huge believer in God giving us what we need when we need it.

As for the technology "being OK"? I would probably say no, it shouldn't be OK to use it....but that's another post entirely!

Look at China to see what happens when people choose the sex of their children through abortion. Millions of baby girls never see the light of day, and the Chinese society is in for huge problems because of the imbalance in numbers of boys to girls. See this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/11/world/asia/11china.html

A society with so many more men than women does not bode well for women's rights. I'm afraid the Chinese women are in for even worse times than they're experiencing now, with forced abortions & sterilizations. Also, a society with so many men who can't find a wife is likely going to become more militaristic. That's a scary thought.

People aren't smart enough to figure out the consequences of their actions when they go against nature. Choosing the sex of your child is a very bad idea.

Hello,

NO WAY!! Would I like to? Part of me would, but I don't think that we should mess with nature!! Technology is amazing, but playing God makes things go awry.

No, I would not. But if it would keep baby girls from being murdered in China, (I don't mean just aborted, I mean murdered) I wouldn't be too upset if they could order a boy. Still wrong and completely against God's doctrine, but at least a way to stop harming baby girls.

No... I would not opt to choose the sex of my child.

Technology can do whatever it wants but I have the same opinion as you on this one.... it is not up to us to decide. It is up to us, to love, raise and protect the children we are blessed with, either sex.

I have 2 boys and 2 girls in that order. If I had to do it over again, I still would not chose.

Yes. I only wanted a daughter. Luckily, I got a daughter.

As long as there isn't a countrywide preference for one sex over the other, I don't see a problem with people choosing. In some cases, with hereditary diseases that are sex-linked, choosing one gender over the other could eliminate the risk of a terrible outcome.

I have a boy , would love the next one (when I have one) to be a girl. But no would'nt use any technology to get one. I just googled this, and I see that it's made possible through in-vitro even on fertile couples. Lot of work and very expensive. Why would I bother with all that when I have a 50% chance of actually having a girl. If I don't , well I LOVE my boy , so I will for sure love that baby too.

In truth, there are other things I would choose for long before gender!

A good immune system and all the traits for good health comes in as number 1.

Average to above average intelligence would be nice.

Also can I have some kids that have perfect teeth and will not need braces?

There is a bunch more too!

But would I do it? I don't think so, well except the health thing. To know that my child would be allergy free and over all healthy would be a much greater boon than a boy/girl!

I love my 4 sons and 2 daughters . . but if i could i have another girl, would I? Ive actully thought about this reccently, and idk, because my girls have a close bond, their really close, and im sure my 16 year old girl has helped out my 14 year old daughter in so many ways, whether it was just good advice or just looking up to her and seeing how she handles situations, and my thinking is maybe adding another girl that could definetly change that, cause right now, my daughters have eachother in the house as the only girls, (besides me), and adding another girl could have 2 against one at some points haha. soo im glad with my 2 girls and 4 boys!
how this hepled haha

No, I would not change the gender of my children... I have 2 boys and 1 girl, if I had all girls or all boys, I would be thankful. I might wonder what it would be like to have the opposite sex, but I would love my child no matter what. I grew up with all sisters, and wanted to know what it was like to have a brother, I think having my boys, I have the answer.

If I was already having to have IVF, than I might decide to make that choice, but I would never go through IVF and pay all that money just to get one or the other. But, I have no judgments on what other people choose to do in regards to their money or their children.

I wanted a girl first and got a boy and by the time he was born I had forgotten about wanting a girl and he was perfect. The next one was close in age ( 12 months difference) so I was actually glad he was a boy to share toys, clothes, etc. The next 6 kids came in twos, 2 girls, 2 more boys, and 2 more girls. It worked out so perfectly and I wouldn't even have thought of that, but God did. I would not chose myself.
