JFF: Do You Have an Old Car? How Many Miles Are on It?

I was just thinking about this last night and another question this morning made me wonder how many people on here drive old cars and how many miles are on them.

What kind of car do you have, how old is it, and how many miles? Do you LOVE this car?

Just curious and proud of my old beater!

2000 Ford Taurus Stationwagon (LOVE it!)
211,000 miles! (all ours except 16K when we bought it in 2011)

What can I do next?

We have two older (and paid off!) cars:

1. 2000 Toyota Sienna XL -- 130K miles
2. 2002 Lexus 350 es - 121k miles

We live in the land of flashy new cars (Orange County); but I've never been into status symbols, personally, and neither has my husband. Brand new cars are nice, but I'd buy a 2 year old car before buying a brand new car. You drive it off the lot and you've already lost money.

2001 Honda CRV - Horrible color, runs great, has 99,000 miles on it. Only thing it's ever needed is new tires and a new battery, oooh and the window motor went out which sucks big time. :( But still for a ten year old vehicle that stuff is pretty minor.

I have 2 1998 Jeeps... one's a Jeep Cherokee, the other's a Grand Cherokee Laredo. They have identical motors. The Cherokee has a brand new engine in it with about 300 miles :) The Laredo has it's original motor and 8K original miles! The original owners (the people I bought it from) literally drove it to the dog kennel and back, that's it.

I loooooove my Jeeps :)

I don't consider my 2005 old...but it may be to some. I don't think you can tell a huge difference between the brand new ones and mine. But it has about 85,000 miles on it. Not bad considering I drive it EVERY day all over the place. It had low mileage when we bought it 3 years ago, but I don't remember how many. We also have an 04 Yukon XL Denali with about 90,000 miles on it, and a 2009 Toyota Prius with about 80,000 miles on it. My hubby drives that one to work 2 hours one way each day. So he does about 1000 miles per week.

Oh - and I LOVE my Armada...the 2005. The Denali is hubby's fav, and the Prius is great when we drive long distances and can put one kid with my parents. I love the gas in that versus the SUV's...but yes, I LOVE my Armada :).

I have a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan with 85K miles on it - yeah - 10 years old and only 85K...can you tell we don't go far?? Its been all up and down the East Coast (except to Florida).....I LOVE my Grand Caravan EXCEPT the maintenance that has been needed over the last two years.

My husband has a 2004 Honda CR-V and it has 85K on it as well.

We gave our 1993 Honda Prelude to my nephew and it has almost 200K on it...most of which HE put on it....we laugh!! When we gave it to him 2 years ago it had something like 67K on it!!

My husband has a 92 Chevy Silverado that he drives back and forth to work in the winter time and has about 130,000 miles on it. We bought it out 3 years ago to replace his 90 Ford F150 that he had in high school and when we started dating. That had almost 300,000 miles on it. Hated to get rid of it but with a growing family and it could no longer get inspected due to the body rotting away. This truck will be parked and replaced sometime in the next 6 months or so. DH is wanting a newer truck.

I drive a 2002 Grand am with 135,000 miles on it. Bought it 4 years ago with 76,000 mile on it. I LOVE this car! I hit a deer with it back in Jan. 2011 and thankfully it was all just cosmetic damage I was able to get all the rust on the doors, trunk and the bottom of the rear fenders fixed, plus the car repainted. Insurance adjuster was amazed at the condition of the car since alot of them are pretty rusted out by this point. Wish GM never discontinued the Pontiacs!! Not sure what I am going to get when time comes for this car. Hopefully GM will start making them again!

Our "college days" car is a 1998 Honda Accord. It has 230,000 miles on it and still drives pretty well. The paint looks terrible, but my husband still drives it to work. I don't drive it anymore though, because for some reason the last 2 times I've driven it, it's broken down on me! We both love that car, though..so many memories!! But we know at some point we're going to have to replace it. Probably soon...

My car is new, but my hubby drives his 2005 Dodge 2500 diesel. It has 290,000 miles on it (no that is not a typo). He used to commute a lot for work and has driven it from PA to Florida twice. He loves his truck and I don't think he will ever trade it in.

Well, I don't consider it OLD, but it has high miles because its our family vehicle (my husband has a car he drives to work) but anything family we take my van. Its a 2004 Ford Freestar, and it has 160,000 miles on it. That includes 6 cross country trips (cheaper to drive than fly!) and its still going strong, and looks great. Its a great car. :)

Of course I'd love a new one, but with one income and gas prices the way they are, and three young kids, keeping what I have, what is reliable and dependable, is the smartest option.

My car might not fit your criteria of "old", but for some people it would. Some people trade up every 2-4 years...
My car was purchased new in 2005. So it is 6 years old (this past August). I have 227,000 miles on it, and it is still going strong. I hope to get at least another 75,000 miles out of it before seriously needing to consider replacement. I love my car (SUV-Nissan Xterra).

Saturn SL1 - More than 110K and still running strong. I put all but 8 of those on myself. That's technically an '02, but I got it fall of '01.

We also have a Dodge Caravan with about 100K. That was was purchased in 2000. It was also bought new.

My Honda CRV has 268,211 miles on it as of this morning. Just put a new exhaust system on it and no other major issues with the exception of a new computer when lightning hit the car...yes lightning....aaargh! I would have a new, old car, if the government hadn't crushed all the good ones in the "Cash for Clunkers." There are FEW used cars that I would want right now. I'm sticking to Ole Reliable!

God bless,
M.

I've got a 2004 Toyota Camry with just under 93K miles on it. Hubby just got a new Camry a few months ago. Now that hubby got a new car I don't put nearly as many miles on my car. Assuming it will last, I'm planning on keeping my Camry for another 7-8 years.

We alternate purchasing vehicles. Our OLD car is a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner. We bought it in 2002 with 10K on it and now it has 170,000 miles on it. My husband uses it to travel around South Florida for his job, it has been to VA several times and to Gainesville more times than I can count. We have replaced the tires and some regular maintenance but no major repair bills ever. We hope to keep it another few years! We do love this SUV and the new 4Runner is so much bigger that we don't know what we would buy to replace it. My husband's cousin has the same vehicle with 220K.

Our new car is a 2008 Toyota Sienna - bought new. I LOVE this van and plan to keep it until it runs into the ground. It has 50K on it. It feels like driving my old Solara until I get out and look at it:)

My 2000 Chrysler Cirrus which I inherited from my husband was bought used in 2003 w/about 32K now has 179,000. Am I as in love w/it as he was, heck no, but it gets me where I need to go. We had gotten this car right before the birth of our 2nd daughter and although we have put about $5,000 into repairs, we are confident everyone has been well worth it.

We are in the market for a new car for my DH so I will be getting his used car he just bought and my oldest who is 13 has begged us to keep the Chrylser for her to learn to drive on. My DH & I both think it would be a great idea b/c it is a very solid car so we will be parking it in the garage w/in the next few months and there it will be awaiting my driving days :) WOW - Scary!

I paid $1800 cash Easter weekend for a '98 Cherokee Limited that currently has 160,000 miles on it. It's got a million cosmetic issues, but the engine is great. It's the first time I've owned something without a payment in...ummm...forever it seems like. My husband's got an '04 Pontiac Grand Am that we only owe another $280 on & that's got about 160,000 miles on it as well (but we bought that one brand new in early 2005).

I drive a 2000 Grand Caravan with just under 79,000 miles on it. We got it new so that tells you how much we really drive (or me anyway). It gets me where I need to go and has taken us on a few vacations. My husband has his "dream" car, bought this summer, of a 1980 something Mercedes. It was all rusted on the hood so got it cheap. He has been fixing it up and that is his baby. He asked if I wanted to trade in for something newer and I just don't feel like giving yet one more person or company my money so my van will be driven until it can't be driven no more. : )

I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban that only has 175,000!!
My husband was the BOMB at getting good deals at GREAT PRICES.
We paid $700 for it. It runs great!! We have had to replace the gas and water pump and the tires. It had two previous owners, both older gentlemen. It has a log of EVERY oil change!! The interior is perfect, baby blue cloth. The exterior is a little rough, rusty on the top. The hood has this fantastic ornament like a flying bird, huge!! My coworkers call my BEAST! I love driving it. It floats down the highway and the motor is strong!!
It needs the A/C fixed and it would be perfect!!

We have a 2002 Ford F350 Diesel crew cab pick up. It only has about 88,000 miles on it tho! Neither of us use it to commute (I do home daycare and he has a work van). We bought it brand new...ordered it with some specifics he wanted for suspension and whatever. But we used to only have that truck for years, no other vehicle. Then my Mom gave us a 1992 Ford Escort Wagon (she got a new 2006) we drove for a few years (it had...get this...34,000 on it and she had bought it brand new!). After my Mom passed away, I inherited her 2006 Ford Focus, so gave the little wagon to my BIL who needed a vehilce in a bad way. The 2006 Focus my Mom had driven a bi over a year before she died and had just 1300 miles on it! Now it has about 14,000!

Guess we have gotten good at low miles!

It's old now but was new once - 1991 Saab 9000. It has 196,000 miles excapt for 50. We have had some work done on it mainly replacing the "original" parts aftere 15 to 17 years. We have had the clutch replaced (normal wear and tear), a spark plug housing and that's it. I had to replace the right rear tail light because a student hit the car while parked during a snow storm. He paid for the part from the dealter. Otherwise all is well. The head lining has dried out due to the hot temps in New Mexico but that's it. Still runs great and gets good gas mileage.

I'm like a few others don't know what I will get to replace her (Betty Lou). My husband has a Jeep Cherokee 94 that had 156,000 on it, it now has 256,000 plus and he loves this thing. He has spent money to lift it in the air and put big tires, a rack, big lights, and a jack on the back. I might have to bury him in it.

I love my car. (:
1999 Honda Civic and it has roughly 176,000 miles on it. Only thing it's going to need is a new clutch. It still has the stock clutch that came with it when it was made. It runs great! And my fiance drives a 98 Honda CR-V with about 130,000 miles on it. Both run great and haven't had any problems with them.
