JFF _What Is the Funniest Thing People Think Your Name Is?

Updated on July 09, 2012
B.B. asks from Bedminster, NJ
32 answers

I loved how so many of you shared unusual things people think your names are, whether you have common or unusual names. My friend's son is named Cade (yes, unusual) and people think (even if the mom says it) that his name is Kate or Cake. What is the funniest thing people thought your name was?

What can I do next?

I've shared this memory before on this site. When my oldest was in elementary school (around 1st grade I think?) he was calling another student "a$$hole" and I reprimanded him to which he replied, "mom, that's his name!" "No", I said, "his name is Axle"! Still laugh about it.

People often think I say, "Jo" and not J..
Then I get the jokes about Jack. (sigh)

I decided that it didn't matter if my kids had unusual names or not. They are not made up names, and are phonetically spelled. People will struggle with the simplest of names.

Nobody has ever called me anything "funny", but I did fill out information for like a CVS card once and typo-d the first letter. Now I get emails from them to "Fictoria".

I have an unusual first and Maiden name...so growing up I heard it all!

My name is Karma Igou.

Growing up in CA, I got called Carmen A LOT.
Then as I got older and men started hitting on me I got and still get:
Are you good Karma OR bad Karma? almost always with a wink ;)
*Which now that I am 35, I am always like, Do these guys really think they are the first one to say this to me???

Some people sing me the Boy George song:
Karma, Karma, Karma, Karma Chameleon!

But I LOVE my name!

Only 1 person has EVER pronounced my Maiden name correctly, in my whole life! It is easy to say: I-Go. The 'U' at the end throws everyone off though...

But I have gotten:
E-gow
I-gow
eye-goo
igloo
E-go
ih-gou
ih-goo

It goes on and on and on...

I also sometimes get a jingle that was once popular along time ago:
You go, I go, we all go for ice cream!?

~Most people ask me if my parents were hippies! Ha!

Like I said in your prior post, my name is F.. People either think I say "Saith" or "April". And sometimes they think I say "Paige". HUH? So I have to spell it, "F as in Frank, A, I, T, H" or I say, "F., as in 'F., Hope and Charity".

My moms birth name is Vonny, and of course, she gets Bonnie all the time. For 65 years she has held her 2 fingers up like a peace sign and says, "V, as in Vicious". LOL!

ha just got back from a play date with the kids and a woman said another kids name was eye lid! I was like what?! then she said it again "leila" totally different but what i heard lol...it was loud in there.

People mostly think my name is Kathy not Jackie when talking on the phone. Its silly. Once someone thought my name is hope. because I said something along the lines of giving us all hope! Lol the customer called me Hope for a year or so! Ohh and the hubby got his drycleaners ticket and it said Mustang "Smith" (changed the last name) because he told the lady "last name Smith" and she heard "Mustang Smith" blahhaha

This is actually a situation where I was the offending party. About 15 years ago, I worked at a fast growing company. Prior to that I had been very good at remembering names. Somehow I thought one of the newer employees (male) name was something completely different than what it was. Like Dan and Bill. I called hime the wrong name ALL the time and he never corrected me. One day he came over to our department and I introduced him to a group of people and was going on about projects he'd worked on..."Dan helped with blah blah blha, Dan this Dan that" He suddenly YELLED " My name is BILL NOT DAN!" After an awkward pause Everyone just started cracking up! When I stopped laughing I chastised him with, "WHY did you let me call you the wrong name for MONTHS! I'll never get your name right now!" I think that was a turning point and I have had a hard time remembering names from that point on.

Oh, and my name is Victoria. When I was really little not many kids could say a V sound so I was Bictoria. I've never liked the nickname "Vicky" and many people will call me that. It's so not me I often have no idea they are speaking to me for a second. I also get Veronica, Virginia, Valerie.......I started going by a nickname many years ago which seemed to help.

I am a Martha, I liked to be called M., my friends husband mis-heard or didnt clearly understand at some point what my name was. He started calling me Bertha. I was so pissed the first couple times, thinking he was making fun of me, since there was a kid on my grade school bus that used to call me that as teasing. So I snapped at him, he honestly was sorry for that. I HATE that name hahah. My first daughter is Mira... its said as MEE-Rah. but everyone calls her MY-Ra. oh well. Not a big deal. Think people over think a name sometimes.

LOL...the BILL/Dan story from below made me spit water at my laptop. No lie!

My hubbys cousin, who I was fast friends with when we first met and we were besties for many many years after, was still dating when I first met her. She had this string of Dave's all in a row! Then she married a Dan. My hubby was HORRIBLE at remembering this and I was constantly reprimanding and reminding him of this for fear of major embarrassment. This particular cousin was one he had those fantastic "hold over your head for life" stories on (like how parents have the naked baby pictures...LOL), and he loved teasing her!

After a while, Dan was good natured about it and played along and the "Dave" thing was a big joke between them. Phew! 20+ years now and at holidays they can walk into my in laws and my hubby can go "DAVE, how the heck are ya" and Dan replies. LOL

As for me, my name is N....just Nicholas, minus the AS. Not sure who decided N. needed to be spelled "Nicole" since it IS the female version of Nicholas and all, but...there ya go. I am usually "Nickle"...or some weird "Nick---HOLE" thing. I love it when the southern accent is added (usually this is customer service folks reading it off a list..or worst..those computer thingys)

SO thats me...Nickle. I usually go by Nik.

My name is pretty ho-hum J./Jessie/Jess, although that and Jennifer and its variations were very popular in my age group, and i have been called many variations of any J name . In HighSchool - there were 6 Jessies in my Band and Choir classes - so we all went by our last names or nicknames.

My DH's first name is Dane ( like the dog , Great Dane) - he has been called Dean, Dave, Dan, and even got U.S. mail for "DIANE"....LOL!

My daughter's first name is Cleo, but we call her by her Initials, C.J.....she gets Chloe, when people are told he actual name, often-times instead of Cleo, alot, and her little brother called her D-Day before he could say her name right!

People don't really mess up my name, but if I had a nickel for every time I am told the "DeNephew" joke like SURELY it is the first time I've heard it.....

And "surely" used in any conversation always brings about the "Don't all me Shirley!" phrase, doesn't it? LOL

Not so funny, if it happens just a few times, but most middle-aged, elderly, or Asian people think my name, Katie, is Kathy. Drives me CRAZY!!!! ...especially after 4 years of working for a Korean company and having the majority of my superiors call me Kathy.

Cade is such a cute name. That's funny about the cake. I have a Cate who was born when her big sister was 4. The 4 year old thought me and daddy were calling the baby "Cake" so now the baby's nickname is Catie Cakes.

I have been called Teresa, Teesha and Jennifer. Yeah, I know.... Jennifer sounds nothing like the first two. My name doesn't even have a "t" or "j" in it. Yet, somehow I've been mistakenly called those. I usually just let them think what that want. I've asked my husband and friends if I have a funny way of pronouncing my name that makes people think I'm saying something else, they said I say it just the way it sounds.

My dishwasher calls me Lindsey. We think it's because my dh calls me Lizzie, and he misheard it. But in spite of being corrected multiple times, he still calls me that, so I take it as a term of endearment :)

My oldest son's name is pronounced "NEW-IN" but spelled differently, and people are ALWAYS changing it to Nevin.

My neighbours name is Naomi. When she worked in child care she found many kids had trouble with her name, so she shortens it to Omi for the children (like German for Grandma). Anyway, that is what her grandkids call her now (my kids do too), and they call their grandpa Opa to match, even though they aren't German.

I hope he got help with his speech impediment! I never saw him after first grade!
