Jaw Getting Stuck

Hi moms, I recently started getting this funny thing where my jaw gets stuck or locked for a few seconds sometimes when I open it and I have to move my jaw from side to side in order to get it unstuck. Any of you had this problem? Should I go to the doctor with this? I'm afraid that one day it will lock and won't unlock....

What can I do next?

My daughter suffered with this condition for years. Finally one night it was so bad, she could not move or speak. As the tears ran down her face, i rushed her to the emergency room and they gave her Xanax and told her to see a therapist and dentist.

The dentist cleared her, and she was already seeing a therapist. She went to a chiropracter that helped her with stress issues and tissue memory issues. That was 5 years ago, she has never had a relapse.

I went to see a Prosthodontist for jaw pain and headaches - it wasn't TMJ, it just turned out I was clenching my jaws all the time - and he ended up referring me to a physical therapist. This helped IMMENSELY. I'm adding my comments because the jaw excercises and self-massage recommended by the physical therapist were the same ones you do for TMJ. Just something else to consider - how are your stress levels? I know, silly question to ask when raising children! If you are experiencing elevated levels of stress, you might be clenching your jaw without even knowing you're doing it. This could lead to the TMJ (temporal mandibular joint) issues others have suggested. Definitely consult a physician, but also try stress management techniques if you're feeling especially stressed.

Ditto to the other response. Sounds like TMJ. I also have TMJ and that is exactly what happens. See your dentist. Good luck.

See your dentist and ask him to check for TMJ and explain your symptoms. It can be corrected in some circumstances and he can fit your for a mouthpiece to wear at nighttime. Prolonged conditions can cause pain in your neck, shoulders, and headaches, dizziness, and popping of your jaw. It may be causing you symptoms you may have associated with other things even. I go next week to get fitted for a mouthpiece, I had no idea I had it until my last dentist appt and they noticed my jaw when open pops out of its place. I don't expereince any of the symptoms that i know of though. I have had dizzy spells so that may have caused it I suppose.

Sounds like TMJ. Check with your dentist. It can come and go and also clear up on it's own.

Oh my gosh. I have this same problem and have had it for years. If I open my mouth to wide, it wont shut and it hurts and it is scary. It has not happened for a long time and then this weekend, I was yawning and it happened and this was the worse it has ever been and hurt like heck and scared me because I could not get it shut. I just started to rub and push on the right side of my jaw and it finally did shut. I cant believe you have the same problem too. I wonder why this is happening.

This can be a reaction to stress coupled with muscle tension due to oral surgery or an old injury.
My jaw used to 'pop' until I underwent some Rolfing~a deep type of massage that releases tendons & muscles.

Wishing you wellness.
