Does anyone know if you can have twins of the same gender with IVF? Does anyone have thoughts on how many eggs to transfer if I am a 37 year old with a high FSH level (14.6)?
My husband and I will probably go with what the embryologist suggests to us. I am nervous about having multiple births. I know essentially God has a plan for us.

What can I do next?

Hi S. - I have twin boys as a result of IVF, and have a good friend with twin boys through IVF as well. They are Fraternal twins. I was in the hospital on best rest along with 2 other mothers that were pregnant with triplets. The doc had only put back 2, and both of them had 1 embryo that split. My doc also would only put back 2.

I was excited about having multiples, but it is the hardest thing we've ever done. I wouldn't change anything at all though - you just learn to adapt. We have a strong faith in God, and that's what has brought us to this point. My twins are now 2, and a big handful - but I LOVE them so much. I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to your FSH level question. I was 32, and don't think that I had issues with FSH. I had multiple ectopics and had to have my tubes removed.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Hello S., we did IVF and had twin girls. The most they would do was two because the quality of my embryos were really good. My dr. does 3 sometimes but only if they are fragmented or quality of them aren't as good. One of my friends transferred 3 and got one baby out of it. I am also 37 but reacted to the meds well and they were able to get 17 eggs out of me, they put in the 2 embryos that had the highest amount of cells. Good luck.

Hi S.,

I don't see why you couldn't get pregnant with twins of the same gender via IVF - you mean as opposed to a boy and girl twin right?

My husband and I do IVF with donor eggs, but we go to Finland because it's much, much less expensive (plus he's from there and we can get a Finnish egg donor). In Scandinavia, they transfer only two embryos max, it's Scandinavian law. Our first attempt was unsuccessful, our second attempt was a success and we now have a 15 month old daughter. Our third attempt was a success with twins but we miscarried both at 8 weeks.

I think whether they transfer one or four embryos, there's always a risk of multiple births - and there's always a risk it still might not be a success, but of course we prefer to lean towards the positive!! :-) My personal opinion is there should only be three transfered maximum. But that's just me.

Good luck and please keep us posted!

Hi S.. First, good luck with IVF; it's how we got our precious 6 month old son.
Second, yes, you can have twins of the same gender. You could have 2 or 3 separate eggs fertilize or the eggs could still split for identical twins.
As far as how many eggs to transfer, that depends upon your doctor and your history with infertility. I would guess the doctor would suggest transferring 2 or 3 depending upon the quality of the embryos (the embroys will be rated as A, B, or C quality).
There is definitely a risk of multiple births so I would go to a more conservative doctor. Some doctors are more likely to implant more embryos so that their success rates look higher even though it results in more multiple births and puts some women in the awful position of selective reduction.
We chose to go with Dr Michael Putman of Baylor Dallas. I think he is the best endocronolgist in the metroplex. He is conservative and their goal is a single healthy baby. Baylor also does not do selective reduction so they are very careful in how many eggs they will implant. I could never, ever choose embryos to be destroyed so I was glad they were conservative.
Best of luck to you. I'm a 35 yr old first time mom and it is by far the greatest joy and most overwhelming love I have ever known. I hope by next Christmas you have the same joy!

I don't know much about the IVF process, but 4 yrs ago, my brother and sister in law did it, and after several IVF attempts they got pregnant with triplets, all boys. So, I'm agreed with the others that same genders are possible. That's about the extent of my knowledge though. lol

Good luck and God bless to all those trying to conceive. :)
