I am considering having my Mirena IUD removed because of weight gain. What is your experience having the IUD removed? Was it very painful? Did you have to be on your period to have it removed? I'm trying to be prepared--I'm just a little nervous about the removal being painful. Thank you!

What can I do next?

Piece of cake. This might be TMI, but I removed my own (many years ago). It had a tiny piece of "fishing line" that I could feel, so I grabbed it with a hemostat and presto--gone.

Super easy--100x easier than having it put in!

I had my IUD in for 3 years before I decided to remove mine because we wanted to try for baby number 3. So I made my appointment and it was out within a few seconds. It was actually more painful getting it put in than getting it taken out. I had some mild cramping that day and spotting but no heavy bleeding. About two months later my periods returned back to normal and 4 months later I was pregnant. But not as scary as people think and I did not have any side effects.

I had mine removed because of constant bleeding and yes it was very painful. The first visit they couldn't remove it because they couldn't find it so I had to come back to see a doctor and have him try to remove it while doing an ultra sound. That visit they couldn't get to it, so they sent me home with some meds to make it easier to get to and then on my third visit, he rubbed some numbing medicine on me which made my whole body shake and made me feel like my heart was jumping out of my chest ( he told me it was what ppl experience when doing crack) So finally they got it out, but between the 3 visits, it was just horrible. If I would have known, I would have taken some pain pills ahead of time. But I have other ppl i know that got it taken out and it wasn't painful for them. Maybe it was just because I have a tilted uterus which made it difficult? Good Luck!

I just had my Mirena taken out 3mos ago. It was out in a matter of seconds and it wasn't painful to have removed, it was like 'oh!' and then it was over.

I wasnt on my period, hadn't had a period for 3yrs (thats as long as I had it) but I had abdominal pain for 2mos after and I'm assuming it was just my body gearing up for my period, my first two periods were heavy and this last one (the third one sine having it out) was normal and the abdominal pain is almost gone.

It was virtually painless. I was not on my period when I had it removed.

When I had mine removed there was a bit of a pinch. I would say it isn't any more painful than a bee sting. I was not having my period at the time.

I had my IUD for only 5 months as it was giving me significant pain all day/every day with lots and lots of bleeding. I was actually laying on the ground in pain at work with cramping and burning feeling. My co-worker rushed me to my OB's office and he took it out immediately! He said my body was reacting in a way he had never seen before. So, I didn't feel it getting taken out b/c I was already in pain.
