Itchy Skin on Belly

My sister is pregnant with her first and is due 2/10/10 - recently her belly has been itching excruciatingly. I would like to get her something to help with this for Christmas, but she says she's tried a ton of things and nothing helps. I didn't have this issue so I am wondering what other women used that worked well for them.

So What Happened?

I talked to my sister and found that she has found a lotion that she says works wonders. I believe it was one of the Palmer's brand one. I passed on the info that she should be using vitamin E oil and she said she has been meaning to buy some. Thank you all for the suggestions - I was happy to pass on the valuable advice to her even if I did decide to pass on getting it for her as a gift.

I had that too. It wasn't PUPPS, but still annoying. My doctor suggested Aveeno. It worked pretty well.

Well, she's either about to get stretch marks (my belly started itching before i got them) or she's getting that last trimester skin condition and needs to see her doc about it. I forget the name of it, it's not serious but it's aggrovating as I understand it.

The itchiness is her skin stretching. I was faithful to put generous amounts of Jason's vitamin E oil on my belly at the first sign of itching both night and day and was able to avoid getting any stretchmarks (you can find it at Whole Foods, natural food stores and some grocery stores). It's a little messy, but in my eyes - very worth it. I would have her start right away and not wait until Christmas.

There is a possibilty that nothing but giving birth will help clear it up. However curel has a new lotion for dry itchy skin. Good luck

Whichever lotion you go with, you may want to recommend that your sister tell her care provider about her itchiness (if she hasn't already). It's usually nothing but there is one pregnancy complication that involves itchiness. Best to let the pro rule out problems.

Hi M.,
You have already received a lot of good advice. Make sure your sister lets her care provider know what she is experiencing. When I was pregnant (with my twins) my skins itched drastically, as well as burned from all the abdominal muscles being stretched. I experienced this from about month 6 -9, and at the end I measured 58 inches around. There really is no complete relief .. lotion, hot water, cold water, etc. Delivery is the cure!
Best,
L.

I found any of the gels for sunburn relief to be very effective! There are a couple different brands out there (like Solarcaine), most are a vivid blue color - fun! The key ingredients are lidocaine and aloe.
Best wishes!

I had really itchy belly during my pregnancy and the only thing that soothed it was straight Vitamin E oil. You can get it in the supplements section of any pharmacy - and I put it on generously, it also helped soften the skin and prevented stretch marks.
Good luck!

I totally sympathize! I had that too in my last trimester. If she has a rash, she should get checked for complications, but if it's just PUPP, which it was in my case, it is crazily itchy and you have to just tough it out. Here's what I tried: Claritin (generic is Loratadine -worked slightly) and OTC creams like benadryl (also worked but only for a brief time.) What helps the most is cool washcloths on the belly or cool baths but I know that's rough in wintertime. This might not help much now, but I hear that it is very unlikely to occur in subsequent pregnancies and is more likely when carrying a boy. Hope she can hang in. Happy Holidays.

Babies R Us sells a spray oil (I THINK it's by Medela) that was the only thing that helped my very itchy belly during both of my pregnancies.

Hi there,
I've had this several times, not just on the belly, and it ended up being a pregnancy rash called PUPPS or something, for which I was prescribed triamcinolone cream, which she could get a prescription for from her OB. Good luck. I feel her pain!

M.,

Bio Oil. You can buy it in CVS. It helps with stretch marks too - I didn't get any from my first pregnancy.

I had itchy skin too, it is a dray year and she is stretching. I used Renew Lotion it is 7x more moisturizing than Eucerin. I love it, it doesn't leave you all greasy either.

I know that pregnancy vitamins include Essential Fatty acids these days, but quite frankly we're all different and we all have different bodies, so usually it's not enough.

Increase EFA intake, increase water intake, and use Africa Spa from the body shop - not the light stuff but the hand and foot stuff. I's WONDERUL.

I had an itchy belly, but it was the stretching of the muscles more than the skin itself. One spot in particular always needed a good scratch. That might be why no products seem to help her...
