My 5 yr old son recently got red itchy bumps on his knee (just one), then a few days later they appeared on his bottom and now this morning they are on his face, his cheek to be exact. The only new thing in the past 2 weeks or so is my kids have been digging and playing in the dirt....could it be related or just excema? Thoughts???? Going to take him to either his ped or a derm ped.....also, my 2 yr old daughter has been playing in the dirt with him and she doesn't have any bumps....I appreciate any help....FYI...They usually play outside from around 3-5 then come in for a bath so the dirt isn't staying on them for long periods of time.

It's not about dirt - dirt is GOOD for kids - they NEED IT!!! Don't hide your kids from things - dirt and other people help build your child's immunity. I know that's not the POLITICALLY CORRECT thing to do - but I'm not a PC person.

If they are white - it's musceloum - it's a "virus" (NO DO NOT PANIC) that kids get. If they are just red - it's most likely excyema (spelling). You can try and figure out what is causing it by changing your soap (laundry and body) ONE AT A TIME for at least 2 weeks - if you use Tide -that would be the first thing I drop. Try the Purex or All "free" items.

Diet has a lot to do with it as well - so if the topical items don't make a change - SLOWLY try diet.

In the mean time - see the pediatrician - set your nerves at ease.

I know when I play in the dirt, my hands get very dried out (in part from the cleaning up portion)...and little scratches can happen. Clean the areas well, and put on a hypoallergenic lotion on as you would for eczena. You can use a little cortozone cream if needed. See if that helps. If it doesn't, then go to the doctor.

Sounds like the dirt had some plant your son's allergic to in/around/near it. I have a HUGE allergy to Smilax -- not a "normal" to be allergic to plant, but any soil it grows in, or any touch, and I get the bumps that spread.

The best I've ever found is Ivarest, made by Blistex, and it helps calm the itch, and keeps the "seeping" from spreading as it dries out the areas with bumps. This might be too strong for your son, so go with calamide lotion mixed with hydrocortizone creme first off.

My bumps spread like wildfire, and in some instances, I've had to cover my arms (or affected areas) with gauze or even cut-down socks to keep from being exposed, feeling air blow past, itching, and keeping medicine on area.

Generally, it takes me a 3-7 days before all bumps go away and can no longer spread.

Good luck mom!!
