Itchy Rash After Wearing Hospital Wristbands?

I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy few days ago and about 24-36 hrs after delivery I started getting an itchy rash on the right hand wrist where I was wearing 4 hospital bands. I took 3 of them off and I hoped the rash will go away but now, about 4 days later, with all the wristbands off, the rash is still there, itching like crazy and the area looks red and swollen. Has anyone out there dealt with rash from hospital wristband or have some tips on how to relieve it? Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am already out of hospital but when I was there I told the nurse about the rash but was not concerned at all. She said it was a good thing I removed the wristbands. I did not insist on this as I thought it'll go away quickly.

Congratulations on your new baby son!!!

I ALWAYS get a rash from hospital bands if they have to be on me more than a day. I don't know that I'm necessarily allergic to the bands themselves, but I think it has to do with getting sweaty under the bands and the skin not being able to breathe underneath. During extended hospitalizations, I have them switch wrists to give my poor wrists a break.

I usually use some anti-itch hydrocortisone cream. Since you have a new baby, you'll be washing your hands a lot. Make sure your wrists get nice and dry, but don't irritate the rash. You can use your blow dryer on a cool setting to make sure to remove the dampness.

You can always call the nurses station where you gave birth and let them know about the rash. They could tell you if you need to run it by your doctor.

Like I said, this happens to me every time and although it's very uncomfortable, it's never been anything serious.

Very best wishes to you!

Nothing to worry about. You were either allergic to the wrist band or something that got between the band and your skin and stayed long enough to irritate it. Apply cortisone cream/ointment to it and the rash should go away in a few hours to a day. You could also try taking an antihistamine if you're not nursing.

Myself and family members and friends have often had a similar rash to various things. It does usually indicate an allergy. It is not dangerous and does clear up with cortisone.

If it's oozing then I'd consider it might be an infection and would call the doctor to ask since staph is common in the hospital.

I would get it seen by the doctor, especially if it is swollen. You could have picked up a staph infection at the hospital.

It sounds like you were allergic to the wrist band. I would call you GP and get in. You need to find out if that is what it is, and for sure what it is made of.. if it is latex.. you need to know that.

When I had my daughter, I got out of the hospital at 10 am.. at my GP office at 3 pm. I had been bitten by a spider or something and it was infected. The nurse marked the red spot from it, and then when it grew said to call my GP.

Good luck.

Sounds like me. End of March my granddaughter was very sick. I sat and held her while she slept. When I left to come home, the inside of my forearm started to itch. Here we are May 11 my arm looks like it is a healing burn. I kept thinking it was eczema! Guess I was wrong. Mine is still itchy. I may have to see a dermatologist this week. Ugh. Don't take my advice. If it does not get better in a few days get it checked out.

Latex allergy? The latex is still on the skin? I think I would call the floor and ask a nurse.
