Hi Moms,

Anyone have any suggestions for RX eyedrops to help with terrible, awful, unbearable itchy eyes due to seasonal allergies? I have tried over the counter drops and have tried two different RX drops. Nothing seems to help. I'm already taking RX allergy pills and nasal spray......but the eyes are still killing me!!!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Every spring, my youngest will start to look like she has pink-eye, and is miserably itchy and irritated. We have used Patanol for her with great success. It starts feeling better within minutes. I do know with allergy meds, though, everyone seems to respond differently to different things. It will probably be a hit or miss thing. Good luck!

I would suggest you try Zaditor. It used to be sold only by prescription and now is OTC. My son had serious issues with allergies that effected his eyes and our optomitrist prescribed this. It is wonderful! I too had some issues with allergies and tried it and it helped as well.

You have gotten lots of great ideas already, but I thought that I would just give you an alternative. I have some pretty bad allergies in the early summer. I have found that if I eat honey everyday that I don't have problems with them and don't even have to take any RX meds for them either. The key to making this work, is that the honey has to be made from bees in your area. So finding local honey is the biggest hurdle. Then, for me, I take a tablespoon in the morning, one at lunch and then one at dinner when they are really bad and once I get the sypmtoms under control, I can back off to a tablespoon 2x a day to maybe once as the season winds down. I have tried this with my kids (altering how much I give them) and it works for them too. I love it because then when I am nursing or pregnant (which was often these last 3 yrs)and couln't take any meds, I had a way to keep my allergies in line. Good luck in your quest for relief.

My son has serious problems with itchy eyes and other allergies all summer, but the eyes are the worst. He has even had the whites swell up so that we had to go to urgent care. We have not found medicine that gets rid of it, so now he is on allergy shots. Its a big commitment, but I think it will be worth it from what I've learned. This is his first summer after starting last fall, and so far so good. One thing the allergist told me to help with eyes is to make sure you don't have bangs that hang into the eyes, because when you go outside, pollen collects in your hair and later gets in your eyes. He also suggested wearing a hat whenever you go outside and taking it off right away inside. Also shower at night before you go to bed, because the pollen in your hair gets on the pillow and makes the eyes worse. And he said to not keep dirty clothes or shoes in your bedroom. Plus, if you have a night where you can't take a shower, wash your sheets the next day. Hope that helps. I think the night time shower did make some difference.

I've never personally tried it, but a friend with a cat recommended washing around the eyes with baby shampoo. Apparently the stuff that makes it tear free actually has a sort of a numbing/antihistamine something effect. I'm sure it would be temporary, but it might help!

Well I take a eye drop called Hypotears. It's can be expensive but it just depends on where you go to get it. But it relieves my itchy eyes. My optometrist suggested it and said that it's just like regular tears. Let me know if this helps. I can understand the itchy eyes it drives me nuts when it comes to allergy season and no solution.

I used to use Opcon-A. I'm sure there's newer stuff as it's been a long time, but it worked well. It wasn't good with contacts, but then I suppose none are. Since I've been doing nasal rinses I haven't needed the eye drops. I'm actually off all allergy meds as long as I'm faithful with my rinses. GL! I know it's miserable.

The only thing that works for me is fluoromethol 0.1%
But you can't take it all the time because it's a steroid. You can use it for 2-3 weeks at a time and it provides some relief.

Would you be interested in a natural way to help your body not be so reactive to allergens instead of treating symptoms? I've had great success with my allergies. I went from having horrible hay fever 3-5 days per week while I was doing netti pots, taking allegra, nettles, aller-max, you name it, to getting off of my prescription and all of the other stuff and only having hay fever once per month. I was shocked! I've always had horrible allergies and just thought I would have to suffer through the Spring, Summer, and Fall. If you are interested, write me at ____@____.com care and good luck!
