Just curious what the definition of natural birth is? Is nubane a pain releiver or just a mind altering drug?

thanks!

Are the baby and mom happy and healthy? Who cares! Let her brag, she is proud of her accomplishment. Not matter how you give birth, it's something to be proud of. Let it go.

To me - natural birth is vaginal, lacking pain medications, using positioning, voice and body/mind connections to stem pain.

Nubain is definitely a prescription opiod drug.

NUBAIN (nalbuphine hydrochloride) is indicated for the relief of moderate to severe pain. NUBAIN (nalbuphine hydrochloride) can also be used as a supplement to balanced anesthesia, for preoperative and postoperative analgesia, and for obstetrical analgesia during labor and delivery.

I definitely think these types of pain meds are better than epidurals tho!!

I think everyone's entitled to set their own standards. By mine, a drug like that wouldn't fit into "natural" birth, but I don't imagine my opinion matters to anyone one way or the other!

I did use IV pain meds in one labor (something in the demorol category, iirc) and that was the worst drug trip of my life! I just can't get on board with considering that "natural".

Then again, I have a friend who posted to FB about her "natural" birth. When I jokingly told her I thought for sure she'd go for the drugs, she told me she had an epidural right away. By "natural", she meant "not a c-section". Alrighty then!

I'm definitely in agreement w/ the other moms that say a natural birth is a vaginal, unmedicated birth. Think about what the word natural means, it's something that would occur all on it's own. Adding medication isn't natural, it's using assistance from a drug to cope, no matter what kind it is. I'm not judging one way or another whether people want to go natural or have medical intervention, but just because you actually push a baby out of your vagina doesn't make it a natural birth, it makes it a vaginal birth. Most people that have natural birth either do so at home or in a birthing facility/hospital that will allow minimum involvement. No, IV's or monitors are usually used and the mother is free to roam about, walking and moving through her labor and using whatever position is most comfortable to push. Taking any meds and lying in a bed are not at all natural, it's modern medicine (in my opinion).

IMO natural is a vaginal birth. I guess people can argue that if you have an epidural w/ a vaginal birth that is not natural. Maybe it should be 'medicated' or non-medicated natural birht.

Either way-nubane is administered thru a patch-as far as I know it does NOT pass thru to the placenta onto the baby, so if it's not affecting the baby and gives you some relief and you want it-try it.

I had a Doula with me and she recommended asking for Nubane before asking for an epid. I did-it helped for a bit, it's like ibuprofen as opposed to morphine-one takes the edge off, the other takes it away...if that makes sense.

You can only have nubane twice I believe throughout labor -if I remember correctly.

No not natural. Natural is using only your mind to relax. If you need help have you considered water. I had a water birth and it was wonderful. I wouldn't use pain to describe my experience at all.

I am in the hospital with my grand daughter. The nurse is here, she works with both areas of this floor (birth and pediatrics) and she said that if the baby comes out from between your legs it is medically considered to be natural childbirth.

Any meds that are used do not make it natural or not natural. You can try to do medication free but that it is still legally natural if the baby is born vaginally.

IMHO any drug introduced means not "natural" birth. . . .but whatevery gets you through because in the end, the baby is going to be here and be wonderful blessing, regardless:)

Many people refer to vaginal birth as a natural birth due to the prevalence of c-sections in our country (nearing 40% of all births). However, a natural birth is one where there are no medical interventions (no drugs, no vacuum, no forecepts, no episiotomy. Nubane is an opiate - not natural.

I have taken nubane at the very end of labor to deal with the last bits of pain. I've been worn out by the end and it helped me to relax and recover to push effectively. If you can get that far and just need a little break then you've done great. Also getting it s close to the end means little exposure to the baby. It is powerful stuff and will leave you woozy. You will feel the contractions and pushing but you will pretty much pass out in between. It "takes the edge off" by making you not so tense about the pain that is to come with the next contraction.

No- can you imagine the effect that a drug that can make you pass out or hallucinate would have on your tiny baby?
You sound scared. You can do this and whatever happens I will say a prayer for the safety of your baby. I had a great book called Birthing From Within with my 2nd pregnancy that I wish I had had with my first. Maybe you would benefit from it--helps get you mind where it needs to be and talks about dealing with discomforts of labor and birth. Just ignore the stuff you find flakey and it's very useful!

I had Nubane and I don't know if it numbed the pain or just made me not care that I was in pain. I know I did hallucinate while on it.
