Is This Normal?? - Castle Rock,CO

My son is 14 mos. and he is constantly pooping!!! He has 5 (full) dirty diapers a day. I have tried cutting back on fruit juice. He gets 1 sippy cup of diluted fruit juice per day, and the rest of the day milk and water. He is an excellent eater and gets a variety of foods. We are very focused on nutrition and do our best to stay away from things that are heavily processed/fried foods/trans fat. Today he ate: BREAKFAST - cheerios with milk, low-fat yogurt SNACK - string cheese LUNCH - peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole grain bread, water SNACK - trail mix DINNER - chicken, beans, diluted fruit juice.

At 12 mos. he had an allergy test checking for food/common allergies as well as celiac disease. Everything came back great. His doctor did these tests to follow up on some ENT problems he was having.

Thanks!

No juice at all. Even diluted it can reak havic on a little ones system. Stick to Milk or water only. It took my daughter until she was 2 to tolerate any juices at all.. Good luck. Let us know what works for you...

Hi T.,

We have been through the same thing at our house! Believe it or not, our little guy used to go up to 10 times per day! We took him to a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children's Hospital. After several tests and dietary changes, my son was diagnosed with "non-specific toddler diarrhea"... so basically they couldn't find anything wrong!

Our son is on daily fiber supplements (Benefiber tablets.) We also try to limit the juice, like you're doing, and push the high-fiber foods. Here we are, a year and 1/2 later, and he is down to 3-4 poops per day. So we've had a big improvement, but still seems like more BM's than normal.

So good luck to you and your little one. I know how old it gets changing those poopy diapers all the time!

I'm sure that's lots of fun with a kiddo still in diapers!
Chiropractic care can work wonders. They tend to look at the whole person instead of just one problem area and are often able to help in more ways than just spinal adjustments.
Good luck!

Ya know, my 15 month old goes through phases where he poops a lot. I mean, if it goes on for months, I'd ask the doctor, but I think it's normal to poop a lot a few days then poop 1 or 2 times/day for a good amount of time. (I've never said "poop" so much at one time!)

The pooping is normal, or it least it is with my girls, who somedays go 4 times a day. Your son is young enough he should be eating whole fat yogurt, which you can buy from Horizon and other organic brands. This may be the cause of it, the fake sugars in low/no-fat yogurt tend to give adults gas and diarherria and those results are multiplied in young children. I would try the switch and see if this helps, good luck!

BRAT - this is a diet recommended for the runs, but adding the foods on it here and there in his diet may help.
B- Banana R- Rice A- Applesauce T- Toast

It really works when they are having intestinal difficulties.

My daughter had the same problem and hers turned out to be an intolerance to milk. I put her on lactaid and she was fine for awhile. Then a couple of months later it was happening agian. This last time I had to take her off lactaid and all dairy products completely. Now she is fine and drinks a toddler soy formular that the doctor prescribed for her. It did not show up as an allergy because it was not just an intolerance. They think she will outgrow it but for now she has no dairy products at all. It also could be a virus some of them last a long time and that will be the only symptom of it.

Hi T.,
Maybe try cutting out the juice altogether. My son can't even have a drink of fruit juice (even if it is only 10% fruit juice). It immediatly gives him diarria. Maybe that is what is causing it.
