Hi Moms! I have a 16-month-old son that seems to be walking into everything with his head. He looks beat up. I know he is young and it is normal for them to walk into things but he does it soooo often and I am getting worried. He does have a big head but lately he has been walking and just hitting things with it. Anyone experience this? Is it normal? Should I take him to the doctors? Thanks for your help!

Hi A.,

Have you taken him to the doctor to explore what is happening for him to do that?

Just a thought. D.

If he hasn't done this in the past and you are sure he isn't just being silly, I would definitely take him to his pediatrician and get him checked out. Better safe than sorry!

Good Luck!!

It's probably normal, but if it is worrying you, definitely talk to the doctor. When in doubt, check with the doc!

One of the children I babysit started doing this and it turns out they had a double ear infection. You might want to have the lil guy checked out just to be on the safe side.

Dear A.

I would certainly seek professional help regarding your son. Children do strage things, but we must remember how sensitive the head area is. It could be a problem with balance, or whatever the case--I would be concerned enough to take him to see a pediatritian.

My second son was like that at that age! He constantly had 3 bruises on his forehead at all times, all different colors because they'd be done days and up to a week apart. So the top one would be purple, the middle usually green, and the one on the bottom layer would be yellow! LOL As soon as we got down to 2 bruises he'd whack his head again! DOH! This went on for months and months. We thought it was his shoes, but it would happen barefoot. We thought it was the carpet, but it happened on tile. He did have tiny feet but I don't know if that had anything to do with it either, lol. It's just one of those things. Today, we tell him (at age 14) that between his teen hormones and whacking his head all the time as a toddler that is why he's so dingy today! LOL

My 3 year old went through a period where he always had bruises on his forhead too. It's kinda embarressing because people always ask how it happened and a lot of times neither he nor I knew how he got the current bump. He's fine now, (still gets bumps from time to time), but the constant bruises are a thing of the past. I think it's just part of growing up they have to learn that there are consequences when playing too dangerously. Not that I would let him do anything too dangerous, but you know what I mean.

My grandson is three and still hits his head when playing or just walking around really fast. I think he just is not used to looking at what is around him yet. He is getting better at it. Otherwise, for 16-month-old it sounds normal. Bad eye-sight is in our family and that is the only other thing I could think of. But kids are too young for the eye checkups.

Hi A.,
When my son was about that age, he was doing the same thing. He would stand and bang his head against the wall. I took him to the doctor and they told me it was normal and when it hurt, he would stop. He is now almost 3 and still likes to bang his head into things. Our hope is someday he will outgrow this.
Good luck
L.

Toddlers are prone to walking into things and getting lots of bumps and bruises. However, you should maybe have his ears checked for ear infections, as this will throw off his equillibrium. You may also want to take him to the chiropractor. That way if there is a pinched nerve or anything, you can have that checked out too.
On the extreme side, you can have him checked for Autism.

He could have an ear infection and his balance could be off. I would call the pediatricians office if you are that concerned. It may not hurt to have him checked out. Sometimes they have ear infections and they do not complain.
Talk to the pediatrician of course about your concerns.
