Is it developmentally appropriate for a 2 1/2 year old to still hold a crayon (or writing implement) with their whole fist? My DS is still coloring like this. He grabs the crayon with his whole fist and colors he doesn't hold it using 3 finger grasp. He doesn't really care much for coloring and never has so he only colors here and there

Thanks

Right on target. Playing with play doh helps strengthen those muscles.

Your child is age appropriate.
They do not yet have, fine motor coordination for writing.
That comes when they are older.
Your child is only 2.5 years old.

At 2 1/2? Absolutely, of course. Same goes for silverware. Most children have to be taught a "pencil grip," and schools don't usually do this until age 4 or 5.

It is very normal. The 3 finger grasp will come in time. Fine motor skills come a little at a time. Get things like legos and puzzels. A lot of kindergartners have to be taught how to hold a pencil correctly. Your son is fine.

Yes. As they develop their fine motor skills their movement will move down. They start holding it in their fist and use the shoulder joint for movement. Then a bit later it's the elbow doing to moving of the hand. Next they'll be holding it with their hand and using their wrist to move the writing tool around. Then finally they start holding the tool with their fingers much better.

You can go to parentcenter.com and join. Sign the kids up by their age and stuff then you'll receive various emails throughout the week/month as to what to expect next and where they should be.

How ironic. My 4 year old's teacher was just saying yesterday that her grip is age appropriate (she uses the same as your little one), but we should try to move to smaller crayons so that she will start holding them with her 3 fingers. So, yes, your 2.5 year old is right on track!
