Basically looking for another book like the What to expect. I found the first two (when expecting and the first year ) really helpful. My kids are now 6 and 4.

Its ok if you didn't find these books helpful. If your figuring it out thats great. I would like a little book for guidance like they were during the early years and thats okay !

What can I do next?

There are MANY books on child development at the library. I always liked the Dr. Sears books.
Books on early childhood education are great too, that's what preschool teachers study to become certified. LOTS of valuable and useful information there.

You need to find Hazel, Nervy Girl. I found all those books useless because they made you want to make your kids comply with the book as apposed to a book that applies to your kids. Not sure if that makes sense. Hazel found this book that was more of a troubleshooting guide. Like you could look up kids are peeing on the dog, yell at the kids, did this work, yes, good job, no, time out. Did this work.....

Okay maybe not exactly like that but it would be far more useful if you are looking for a book that actually applies to your kids.

I liked those books too. Maybe because my kids were generally on target, maybe if they were way off it would have bothered me.

I didn't look to see if you had boys or girls. I'm looking into the American girl doll books that they have for teens. lots of people recommended the puberty books but I see they also have some books that deal w emotions. they are more for the pre teen, teen than the parent but anything to help smooth these years.

the more I hang around mamapedia the more I see certain things are typical for certain ages. like my dd went through a lying stage around 6 and 8 . honey did you pick up your clothes? yes mom I find them now on the couch instead of the floor. they sure are funny little people

I liked the "what your first grader needs to know" etc. They have one for each grade level including preschool and k etc. And they are a similar format to the book you liked.

From Amazon, they have a great series of books, for each age:
ie: Your Four Year Old, Your Five Year Old, Your Six Year Old, etc.
Just search for it at Amazon.
I got one of these books.
I liked it.
It merely describes how a child is at each age juncture and is easy to read, and is not a "lecturing at you" type of book.
Though written years ago, it is very informative.

Not exactly, but I think that's partly because kids just very waaaaay too much. I found it more helpful to think of a particular area of child development to read about - a book on nutrition or discipline - or a parenting magazine. When I'm at the library I love flipping through the latest issues of Parenting and Parents and Family Circle. I don't really have a feel for any one magazine in particular. I just really like looking at the cover and the table of contents to see if there are any articles that hit home.

I do like the Dr. Sears books. I also like Elizabeth Pantly. I find them to be very much in tune to my own parenting style.

Good luck with your search.
