Is There a National Support Network or Something for Victims of Violent Crimes?

Hi Moms,

Tons of support is pouring out for the families in Conn. I was wondering if there is some sort of foundation that helps families who are victims of violent crimes? I think it would be nice to honor those in Conn who are receiving a lot of support by providing support to those who have experienced similar losses without the media bringing it to the attention of the nation.

Do you know of any such organizations, and can you post them?

Thank you.

2 years ago my cousin's son was murdered and they did in fact receive help from such a fund. We are in CA and I am not sure of the exact name but I am sure you can find one in your area if you call your local police station and inquire. I do know it was specifically for victims and families of 'violent crimes'.

What a thoughtful thing to do.

Merry Christmas!

I believe that is handled on the state level. I know here in DE they have a Victim's Advocate group.

Not nationally, but in CA we do have a Victims of Violent Crimes government program that helps victims with costs associated with the crimes like it will pay medical bills, funeral expenses, moving costs, counseling/therapy, etc.

I think each state either has one or doesn't, but there isn't a national one that I am aware of.

I don't know about national ( or CT), but Tx does have one. My daughter was murdered 5-1/2 yr ago and victims assistance was offered to us. It covered things like clean up (if it had happened at our home), help with funeral costs, transportation (I was out of state for a few days when it happened) and covered the cost for counseling.
You should be able to contact your state attorney general's office, local police or local district attorney's office for information.
You might also try contacting your local chapter of Parents of Murdered Children (POMC) or The Compassionate Friends(TCF), for more information. Funeral Homes usually also have information
Thank you for wanting to help

The only national group I know of is The National Coalition for Domestic Violence, headquarters I believe in Houston TX.

Other than that I believe most groups are run through churches or county social services.
