Is Strep This Bad for Kids Too?

I could have sworn I had the flu on Saturday...chills, sweating, fevers, vomitting, the whole 9 yards. I also went to bed at 2 in the afternoon and slept mostly until 10 on Sunday morning - and that's when the sore throat kicked in. My fever went to 104.6 last night, but a cool shower brought it down quickly. If that didn't work, I was going to the ER. My sore throat is SO bad though. I can't even sleep because to swallow is so painful that it jolts me awake. I know that sounds dramatic, but it's the truth. I am SO tired, but I can't sleep. Maybe 15 minutes at a time. I went to the doctor first thing this morning and got Penicillan for the strep, my hubby called back and asked them for high dose motrin which he is on his way to get now, and he also brought home some Cloriseptic...nothing is helping though. I've been downing ice water, hot tea, and popsicles. I have not eaten, or wanted to eat anything, since breakfast on Saturday...I am down 12 pounds. Which is good because I have a long way to go still, but bad because that is a lot of loss in only 3 days. The doctor said as long as my kids were drinking out of my cups, which they aren't, then they won't get strep from me. I guess my question is how does anyone survive strep? Was it really this bad as a kid and we just don't remember it? I haven't been this sick in YEARS!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ugh, I feel so bad for kids. I thank God that my doctor said this won't pass to them. My temperature dropped to 101.8 within 10 minutes of taking the shower and has held steady just under 100 since then. The doctor said my tonsils are swollen some, and my lymphnodes (sorry for my misspellings) have NEVER been so sore. What a horrible thing to catch!

Oh no! That's Terrible! I am mildly in the same boat--I caught my kids cold am I am MISERABLE!! Sore throat, coughing like crazy, very hoarse, ZERO energy, etc... And to think I didn't give either one of my kids ANY medicine! I feel so guilty taking Mucinex, Benadrly, Tylenol, & cough drops! Hopefully they didn't feel as bad as I do right now! :O
I remember having strep that bad as a child. Just once though, the other times weren't nearly as bad! I even got a rash on my hands which the doctor said was from nearly developing Scarlet Fever!
I think some cases are just worse than others! Hope you feel better very soon!!

Strep is that bad.
My son used to get it every year, without fail.
He would take Tylenol with codeine for the pain some years.
Now, he panics at even the slightest sore throat and will ask to be taken to the Dr for a swab. He is 15 now, and remembers the years of strep. Thankfully, it has been several years since he has had it.

Feel better soon,
I am so sorry you hurt.

God Bless

My granddaughter had it this Summer and was in the hospital for nearly a week and I thought we were going to lose her once or twice from her throat being so swollen she could barely breath.

Her right tonsil was pushing the left one out of it's way and the Uvula was completely hidden by the tonsils. Her tongue was so swollen from dehydration she could not touch her teeth together. She had a "Mr. Thirsty" that she held on to for 3 days to suck the puss and drool from her mouth. It was horrible. She just laid there for days running a fever on a Rocefrin drip.

They tested her for Mono 3 times and the doc said he'd never seen Strep this bad, it was always Mono when the throat was this bad.

I know, right? My daughter gets it 4-5 times a year. She seems to start to bounce back after a day or two on the meds. My husband got it once from her, and he said he had NEVER felt so bad ever! For some reason, I seem to be immune. Hope you feel better soon!

I had strep throat 4 years ago. It wasn't that bad for me. It started out as a scratchy throat, then the next day it got painful, but luckily I was at work so I tested myself for strep and it came back positive. One of the doctors at work gave me a prescription so I took it as soon as I got off of work (I had no patient contact that day, I only answered calls). My fever didn't start until that same night, but it was only 100-101. It was gone by the next day and I started feeling better too. Hopefully you'll start feeling better once the antibiotics have been in your system for a few days. Good Luck!

Sounds to me like you have a nasty flu, a 104.6 fever is no joke. What has it gone down to? If it spikes again you should inform you doctor or whoever is on call, put ice packs on your wrists, inner thighs and forehead to bring it down. Stay on top of the Motrin, when you use the Cloriseptic try and spray it directly onto the area that hurts so much. Do you still have your tonsils? If so, you may want your doctor to take a look at them being that it could be Tonsillitis.
Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils most commonly caused by a viral or bacterial infection. The symptoms you have are similar to those of tonsillitis such as you severe sore throat and fever. There's no treatment to shorten the duration of viral tonsillitis, bacterial causes are treatable with antibiotics. I'd see your doctor again and take it from there.
Feel better.

make sure you take ALL the medication you were prescribed, even if you are feeling better and only have a few days left of meds, take them all or it could come back even stronger.

Yes, it really can be that bad. As a child I would get strep at least 3 times a year, one year 8 times. I finally outgrew it. It is contagious so be careful.

Hope you feel better soon.

Remember too that you can have strep and NOT have a sore throat. I'd keep an eye on my kids as is does go through families many times and is passed around. My grandchildren surely don't share cups and they pass it around every year almost.
