I am starting to work out and I have one calf that is smaller than the other. Many years ago, I broke my tibia, the large bone in your lower leg. Somehow along the line I got the impression that I would not be able to build muscle in that leg very well due the severity of the break. My husband doesn't think that is true,. If anyone knows a bit about a muscles ability to train after a broken bone, I would sure appreciate the input. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi J.,

I broke my tibia and fibula in Sept 07. It was a complete spiral break, so I did not need surgery, but it took longer for me to heal since I had no assistance from a surgery. I was not able to walk without assistance until December. It is now June 08, 9 months later and I feel that I have most if not all my muscle back in my leg. It was a long and trying road, but I eventually got to this point. I never went and had any formal therapy because of other activities I already did, but maybe you can see if you enjoy any of these. I do brazilian jiu-jitsu, which is a ground grappling sport. You work every muscle in your body, even those you don't know about. Because it is a ground game, you use your legs and arms alot. I also do jazzercise, which has helped me get more confident in small jumps and movements very similar to dance steps. This class helps tone your major muscle groups. I also run. Now, my biggest challenge is getting my speed back. Sometimes I feel like I am just treading through muddy waters. But, I will get there eventually. In the meantime, I do what I can and know that it will take a few more months for me to get back to 100%. Just don't give up and do what works for you and what you enjoy doing.

Every now and again, there is a person who visits this web-site. I think his name is Daniel Pena. I think he is a personnal trainer. He has given really good advice in the past. Perhaps, "looking him up" and asking him would benefit you. Just a thought.

If you live close to 183 and Lakeline Blvd, I can recommend that you visit Tillman Physical Therapy and Sports Training Center! They are great and they have helped my son!

Good luck,
