When he gets to kindergarden or 1st, I would change him...... If he is not growing out of it and he is light weight... why not ?
My son is almost 4 years old and he still sleeps happily in his toddler bed. He is on the small side, so there are no problems with him fitting in it, and he sleeps well all night and has not asked about another bed or complained about his bed. I am just wondering if there is any other reason to switch him at this point to a regular size bed. How long is the crib mattress good for? TIA

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If he fits & he sleeps in it well, I would not change it right now.
What's the saying "Why fix what isn't broken?"
When he is ready, you can get a twin mattress & put on the floor or on the box spring w/the rails if you don't want it to be too high.
If he is a happy sleeper I would leave him alone. My son moved out at 4 1/2, he loved his "little bed" but we were moving and I did not want to move it knowing we would be switching soon. We donated it as we moved and he switched to a full size. No issues, but if it was not for the move I would have let him stay in ituntil he outgrew it.
My son went right from a toddler bed to a loft bed, I guess it was around 5.
I knew my son was ready when he started sleeping on the floor next to his toddler bed! It started out with him saying he just wanted to be on the floor, but it continued on for a while and then he finally told me his toddler bed was not comfy to him. He had just turned 4 and he is is a tall kid and was around 40-45lbs at the time, so I think that baby mattress just was not enough support for him anymore. So we switched and he was overjoyed about it - no transition issues at all.
One of my boys was a bit older than 5 when we finally moved him out of the toddler bed and in to a twin sized bed. He is on the smaller side too. We had to put a stool next to the bed for him to get in and out.
There is no reason to move them if they still fit and sleep find in it.
He sleeps, he's happy. Don't fix what isn't broken. :-)
