Hi,
I highlighted my hair and colored them once when i was pregnant with my now 13 month old son. My OBGYN had no problems with me to get it done as long as i got it done after the first tri-mester. The only thing i did avoid was the fumes(sat with the window open) and i asked my stylist to leave the application for the minimum possible time . My sis-in-law,sister both did the same thing when they were pregnant with thier kids respectively.I only colored them once and the rest of my pregnancy used ammonia free hair color enhancing shampoos.Hope this helps.
Go with whatever makes you comfortable. Good luck with everything!

My doctor always said it was ok after the first trimester. I always got my hair highlighted with foils, and never had a problem.

Generally, highlighting is okay because it doesn't touch your scalp, and is not absorbed into the skin. I'd be careful about dying because of all the chemicals involved. May want to wait on that. Also, your body chemistry is different during pregnancy. You may end up with a different color than normal because of the hormonal changes. Also, if you go to a salon, you'll be surrounded by chemicals and chemical odors, which can't be healthy to inhale. I would personally steer clear of both, just as a precaution.

First ask your doctor. that is the most important thing.
Second, I asked my doctor and she said as long as I was into my second trimester it was fine. I was in my 7th month when I was DESPERATE to dye my hair. I am a natural brunette and was blonde at the time and my roots were horrible and all I could think about was how horrible I would look in pictures once my baby was born. The stylists now say as long as the fumes are over powering and the dye isnt in direct contact with your scalp its harmless.

Once again just ask your doctor their opinion and tell them what your feeling and see what can be done.

Hi L.,
I wanted to dye my hair so bad when I was pregnant with my now 14 month old son. But I heard from a lot of different people including my doctors that the effects on an unborn child of dying your hair while pregnant are not clear, it is still unsafe. I ended up not dying my hair just to be safe. I know it's hard to wait but I felt better about it. I hope this helps.
Sincerely,
H. S.

Hi
I am 7 months pregnant and have highlighted my hair twice now. My family in in the hair business and as long as the dye does not touch your scalp you are OK. So highlighting is safe. I have foils but the cap is probably safe too since it doesn't touch the scalp.

From what my doctors told me is that there's no real way to know. There hasn't been a group of people willing to do a test study to see if it hurts their child. However you are putting chemicals on your skin that could get into your body and be transferred to the baby. I wouldn't do it, but I do have friends that did. One friend is a hair stylist and swears that it's ridiculous to think that it could harm and unborn child. In all honesty, it will probably be fine, but maybe you should just wait until after your first trimester is over. That's the most fragile part anyway. Good luck to you!

as a hairstylist myself I can tell you that coloring your hair is fine provided you use certain products. YOu want to use a demi-permant color, Like Richesse from loreal, Chi Color line, or So color from matrix. Even Paul mithell has a good line. You may also highlight you hair no problem. DO NOT USE BOX COLOR FROM DRUGSTORE!!!! that is the worst for your hair. any other questions feel free to ask
and make sure uyou ask your stylist what they use on your hair.

As long as you area in a ventilated are it is ok, after the 12th week. You should test a little bit first bc your hair may react differently bc of pregnancy hormones. ( i read this is Your pregnancy week by week.)

L.,

Most of the hair dyes and highlights are very safe to use while you are pregnant. Always check with your doctor and do your own research to make sure you are comfortable with your decision. One problem you could encounter while dying your hair is, that due to being pregnant your hair will grow faster than before, showing roots sooner. If you dye your hair too many times in a certain period of time the color may not take and/or the color could show up different on your hair due to being dyed so many times and hormones. If you dye your hair at home make sure the room is very well ventialated. Breathing in the chemicals isn't good for you or the baby. Good Luck in your decision :)

ok, i'll tell u exactly what i was told (which made me NOT do anything to my hair until well AFTER i had my daughter).....it is completely safe to have your hair done, especially since when they do the highlights, normally they do not go directly to the scalp...dying is perfectly fine too. just make sure you're in a well ventilated area (i think the dr. said that a hair salon is ventilated enough, but if at home, make sure all windows are open until the smell has dissipated)...the PROBLEM, is that with all the hormonal changes, and chemical changes going on in your body, SOME women do these highlights and dyes and everything comes out fine...but SOME do it, and they can try going blond and come out green, or go brown and come out nearly black...or whatever...just that sometimes with all these changes going on, the chemicals won't always comes out exactly as they have in the past when you weren't pregnant. THAT is the ONLY reason i didn't do anything to my hair. i wasn't really in the mood for green hair (purple would've been fine, but green's not for me lol). but yeah, all the dr's i've talked to said the same thing, safe, but not a guarantee that you'll get the outcome you're used to! good luck.

Don't do it. Chemicals aren't good and your hair changes during pregnancy. The dyes don't take the same way.
Wait till you have the baby and plan a moms afternoon out... you wil need it.

I would advise you wait until after your first trimester. When you do color or highlight your hair make sure it's in a well ventilated area. Even if you think you are breathing just fine baby still needs all of his oxygen too! I colored my hair while I was pregnant with my first child. She is healthier then my others (not saying that's why cause that would be silly lol), and she is extremely smart! So no worries!

Hi L.,
I think this is one of those personal choices. When I was pregnant with my little girl, I had the same questions about dying my hair. I spoke to my hair stylist and did some of my own research. Basically what I found out was that there have been no birth defects linked to hair coloring. However, the smell of the dye may really bother you, talk to your stylist about getting dye that has the least amount of fumes/stink. I hope this helps and good luck with your pregnancy!

Hello, I am R. and I am mother of 4 months old baby girl, during my pregnancy I was concerned about dying my hair, and my doctor told me that I can dye my hair every two or three months, that the products for hair is not going to harm the baby at all because, they use a diferent products this days, not like a years ago. My only recomendation is just be carefull not to much peroxid and if you go any saloon just let thems know that u are pregnant, they should know what to use for preganant women. I make my highlights every 2 months, and thank God nothing happen.

Take care,
R.

Hi L. :)
I have a beautiful 9 month old boy. I never stopped getting my hair colored or highlighted while I was pregnant. My hairdresser said that there is no known harm from getting your hair colored while pregnant. This was as of Jan '07... I think it's a case where you should decide what your gut tells you. My gut said that it was okay. I just got my hair done less often than usual and held a towel to my face so I didn't inhale the fumes! Good luck to you :) R.

Hi! My kids are 4 and 2, and my dr. told me not to use anything that wasn't natural. I used the color that they sell at Whole Foods ( I think it's called Naturcolor, and they have another one that I like also) while I was pregnant, and I still use it! I love it, and it isn't smelly at all. It kind of picks up on your hair's natural hightlights, so I haven't done highlights on top of the color. ( I have brown hair, if that matters. ) Anyone who has cut my hair has asked who does my color, so it must be ok-looking.
Good luck! R.

My doctor told me just to wait until after the 1st trimester. After that, I did it about every other month. Kyle is now 18 months old and absolutely perfect and MOM didn't look horrible in all those pictures during her pregnancy. Look and feel good! If that means dying, go for it! It will not harm the baby. That's what my dr. said. Also, I only go to the salon to get it done and they used a different coloring while I was pregnant. Good luck!

I highlighted my hair during both my pregnancies and didn't find it to be damaging to the baby. I heard if you're worried about it, just avoid doing it the first three months. After that, I think it's perfectly safe. I think the dyes they use now are much better than those they used years ago.

I took the advice that it was safe after the first trimester. Some just won't do it at all. Ask your doctor for her advice if you really feel uneasy about it, but I say enjoy and do what ever you can to feel good.

I was allowed to highlight my hair (and I did) once my first trimester was over. I read up on highlighting and dying hair - highlighting is ok (after your first trimester) by dying is not ok at all!
