Is it okay to use the microwave to warm up the bottle that came out of the fridge for the baby? instead of running it under hot/warm water?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Cool. I had a Munchkin bottle warmer but it started to smell burnt and it took too long, the thing was $20 and I returned it. Now I'm back to the old fashioned, boil water, then I take a bottle from the fridge, put it in there and wait a few minutes. Or I'll run the cold bottle under hot water to bring up the temp. My baby is currently 2 months... I heard that if the milk is too cold the baby could get cramps and stomach aches?

I saw my friend heat up a bottle for her son in the microwave becuz he was hungry and she was desparate.

You should never microwave plastic as mentioned previously it realeases cancer causing agents into the food/drink. You also should not put really hot foods into plastic for the same reason. What I do for my child care is mix the bottles as needed, or mix the mix with half the water and refridgerate it. Then I add the additional warm water when the bottle is needed.

I think they usually say not to because the microwave can leave hot spots in the milk, and burn the baby.

As far as everything I've read...No. The reason being is that it can create hot spots that don't quite blend. You know how when you microwave a meal...the center can be too cold or hot. It doesn't warm it evenly.

I used to warm the water in the microwave first in a shaker bottle. (Generic Gerber bottles) Then pour in formula, shake it and then pour it in the bottle she used.

I don't know if it's formula or breast milk you are using Similac sells ready made serving size formula. Shake, crack and serve.

I hope this helps.

Hello S.,

I see some of my friends who do use the microwave to heat up a bottle, but I do not recommend it. Everymorning, I heat up my twins milk on the stove, the old fashioned way. First, I pour milk into each sippy cup, then pour the milk in a sauce pan on the stove, get the milk just warm enough so the chill is gone. This is a much safer way for babies, IMO, to drink milk. And if you have a mini oven for your counter, if you ever decide to get those Gerber Graduates meals, just place the contents of that container on the broil pan and cook the food inside the mini oven. As you can see, I am not a big fan of the microwave. Honestly, how can microwaving any food be good for us. I am just realizing this now after using it since I was in high school in the 1980's.

If you have time, research, on the internet, the dangers of the microwave.

The way the micro wave breaks down the milk and the plastic it can not be good for your little ones body and mind.

God Bless,
M.

No. First, the milk heats from the center out, so if you use the microwave, you must shake the bottle to mix the hot milk from the colder milk. Second, the microwave breaks proteins in the mother's milk, and slow heating is best. Third, you should never heat a plastic bottle. Plastics contain byproducts that release cancer causing agents when heated. You should always heat in glass and transfer to plastic it you are using plastic.

It is not recommended because it changes the chemical makeup of the protien. I have also worked for wic for 13 years and I have seen 1 infant that got 2nd. degree burns and had to be tube fed for about 4 months and then physical therapy to teach the child not to fear eating.

My recommendation would be no!

To answer your question first, it's not a good idea for the reasons the ladies below have stated...

now the question, how old is your baby? I learned, after worrying about the temp of my baby's milk that they really don't care about the temp after a certain age ( I want to say 4 mos or so...) The idea is to keep it cool so as not to spoil...but the little ones don't care if its cool or warm...as long as they GET IT! :)

I used to use a microwave to heat my baby's milk. You must make sure to take the nipple off and make sure that you test the milk first because the bottle may feel warm...but the milk my be hot!!

Are you breastfeeding, or formula feeding? When I was breastfeeding, I just gave my son cold breastmilk....heating it up kills some of the nutrients.

When I started to supplement with formula, I just used room temp water. I used to have a bottle warmer, and it took way too long. Once my son was older (around 3-4 months), and I just gave him cold formula from the fridge. He didn't seem to mind in the least.

No. When you use the microwave, you can create "heat pockets" in the milk or food. While some parts are cool - lukewarm, you may come across a pockets that is very hot and can burn your babies mouth. I know its easier and faster, but I don't think its worth the risk.

no u shouldn't do that, its bad for the baby and when u warm the bottle on the microwave it leaves hot spots in the milk and that can burn the baby and it won't taste the same... just warm under hot water or just put a pan with water in the stove then put the bottle in when the water is hot. Also there is bottle warmers at target or any other place... they worked great. i used for my girls and it only take couple minutes. hope this help

I have heard that the microwave takes something away from breastmilk, then defeats the purpose of breastfeeding. Also you get hot spots and could burn the baby. I can warm up frozen breastmilk in less than 15 min, so I would recomend no. However if the baby is a little older he/she is probably not picky and will take hot or cold.
